What an oscar really costs
A juvenile oscar costs only $7–$15, but it grows to a foot long and needs a 75-gallon tank, so a typical setup with stand, canister filter and heater runs about $900 before the fish goes in. After that, expect around $435 a year, half of it electricity to heat 75 gallons, plus large pellets, filter media and heater replacements.

Health costs to plan for
| Condition | What it is | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hole-in-the-head (head and lateral line erosion) | Pitting on the head and along the lateral line; a vet-written guide says oscars and discus make up the largest share of cases, linked to poor filtration, dirty water, poor diet and Hexamita. Usually not fatal but can scar permanently. Source | Better filtration and diet; metronidazole in food for 5 days (Seachem MetroPlex 5 g, $8.14); in-clinic fish vet $50–$100 | $8–$108 |
| Ich (white spot disease) | A protozoan parasite usually brought in with new fish or feeder fish; white spots, flashing and rapid breathing. Source | API Super Ick Cure 16 oz ($21.19) and a slow temperature rise; vets confirm by skin scraping, about $50–$100 in clinic | $21–$121 |
The yearly estimate includes an average of $29 for illness and injury. Mainstream U.S. pet insurers do not cover aquarium or pond fish. Nationwide's avian and exotic plan, the main exotic policy, covers birds, rabbits, reptiles, small mammals and a few others, and fish are not among the named species, so budget for medications and the rare fish-vet visit yourself.
What drives the cost
- Buy the tank for the adult, not the 2-inch juvenile. Aquarium Co-op prefers 75 gallons for one oscar (many keepers call 55 the minimum) and 90–100 gallons for two; PetSmart's own listing says 125 gallons and up to 18 inches.
- The tank package is the big cost. A 75-gallon ensemble with canopy, stand and LED was $499.99 on sale at PetSmart ($799.99 regular); a bare 75-gallon tank was $269.99 at That Pet Place.
- Oscars are messy eaters, so filtration matters. A Fluval 407 canister (383 gph, 23 W) was $256.99, and a vet-written guide notes canister filters are generally more effective than hang-on-backs against hole-in-the-head.
- Heating 75 gallons to the 74–80°F Aquarium Co-op recommends is the biggest running cost: about 1,190 kWh a year with the canister, roughly $217 at the July 2026 U.S. average rate.
- An adult oscar eats a lot of pellets. We assume six 8.8 oz tubs of large cichlid pellets a year (about $90); Aquarium Co-op also suggests freeze-dried krill or crickets as snacks and a vitamin supplement.
Is it legal where you live?
Oscars are legal to keep throughout the U.S. and sold at national chains; Astronotus is not on the federal injurious-wildlife list. Never release one into the wild.
Cities and counties can have their own rules. Check locally before you buy.

AquariumScience.org figures 'very roughly' 1.5 W per gallon to hold water 10°F above room temperature, so 75 gallons averages ~112.5 W; the Fluval 407 draws 23 W. 135.5 W × 8,760 h = 1,187 kWh × $0.1831/kWh (EIA U.S. residential average, July 2026) = $217.34. Low: 5°F rise = $127.11. High: 15°F rise in a cool room = $307.56. The LED light is not counted. U.S. EIA Electric Power Monthly: average residential price, July 2026 (18.31 cents/kWh); AquariumScience.org: Aquarium electric cost (heater ~1.5 W per gallon for a 10°F rise); PetSmart: Fluval 407 Performance Canister Filter ($256.99; 50–100 gal, 383 gph, 23 W); Aquarium Co-op: Care Guide for Oscar Fish (75 gal for one, 10–12 in, 10–20 yr, oscars $7–$15+) | |
