What an african cichlids really costs
Twelve mbuna cost about $96–$240, but the 4-foot, 55-gallon setup with a second filter, cichlid sand and a pile of rock typically runs about $640 before any fish go in. After that, expect around $330 a year, nearly half of it electricity to heat 55 gallons, plus spirulina-based food, filter media, weekly water changes and replacing fish lost to fighting.

Health costs to plan for
| Condition | What it is | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malawi bloat | An intestinal problem of Rift Lake cichlids: loss of appetite, spitting out food, then a swollen belly. Vets link it to low-fiber, high-protein or high-carbohydrate diets, poor water and salt; AquariumScience.org says about half of bloated fish have something untreatable. Source | Metronidazole mixed into food (Seachem MetroPlex 5 g, $8.14) as early as possible; vet visit $50–$100 | $8–$108 |
| Ich (white spot disease) | A protozoan parasite usually brought in with new fish; extra mucus, flashing, gasping and white spots. Source | Ich medication (API Super Ick Cure 4 oz, $6.99) and a slow temperature rise; vets confirm by skin scraping, about $50–$100 in clinic | $7–$107 |
| Fin rot, bacterial infections and hole-in-the-head | Petco lists fin rot, bacterial infections, columnaris and hole-in-the-head/lateral line erosion for African cichlids; torn fins from fighting and overcrowding raise the risk. Source | Water changes and an antibacterial such as Seachem KanaPlex ($8.14 per 5 g); vet visit $50–$100 | $8–$108 |
The yearly estimate includes an average of $15 for illness and injury. Mainstream U.S. pet insurers do not cover aquarium fish. Nationwide's avian and exotic plan, the main exotic policy, covers birds, rabbits, reptiles, small mammals and a few others, and fish are not among the named species, so budget for medications and the rare fish-vet visit yourself.
What drives the cost
- Mbuna need a 4-foot tank. PetSmart's guide says to 'get at least a 4-foot-wide aquarium' and that a 55-gallon holds up to 15 African cichlids; Seriously Fish lists a 36 x 18 in base as the minimum for even a yellow lab and says a mbuna tank 'should be overcrowded to reduce aggression'.
- Rock is a real line item. Mbuna live among rock piles, and aquarium rock sells by the pound: a 30-lb lace rock assortment was $131.95 at Aquatic Arts and holey rock $59.99 for 10 lb at Buce Plant; collecting or buying from a local club costs far less.
- Filtration and water changes are heavier than in a community tank. PetSmart wants the filter to turn the tank over 5 times an hour (275 gph for 55 gallons) and 25–30% water changes weekly, so most owners add a second filter such as an AquaClear 70 ($72.99).
- Feed greens, not bloodworms. Seriously Fish says vegetable matter such as spirulina should be a large part of a yellow lab's diet, and Chewy notes vets link Malawi bloat to diets low in greens and high in protein and fat, and to aquarium salt.
- Heating 55 gallons to the 78–82°F PetSmart recommends is the biggest running cost: roughly 845 kWh a year for heater and two filters, about $155 at the July 2026 U.S. average rate.
Is it legal where you live?
Lake Malawi cichlids are legal to keep throughout the U.S. and sold at national chains; no cichlid is on the federal injurious-wildlife list. Never release aquarium fish into the wild.

| Cichlid sand (aragonite-type, buffers pH) | $74 | Mbuna need hard, alkaline water (pH 7.7–8.6 for yellow labs, Seriously Fish), and Petco says aragonite substrate may help. CaribSea African Cichlid Mix Ivory Coast sand is $18.46 per 20-lb bag at Chewy. PetSmart's guide calls for about 3 in of substrate (roughly 1.5 lb per gallon, about 80 lb), so four bags typical; low two bags for the 1–2 in layer Petco suggests; high five bags. Chewy: CaribSea African Cichlid Mix Ivory Coast Aquarium Sand, 20-lb ($18.46); PetSmart: A Set-Up Guide for Your New African Cichlid; Petco: African Cichlid care sheet (29+ gal, 72–82°F, aragonite substrate, secure cover, up to 20 yr by species) | |

| Every year | |||
| Spirulina-based cichlid pellets | $47 | Most mbuna are grazers: Seriously Fish says vegetable matter such as spirulina should form a large part of the diet, and AquariumScience.org links high-carbohydrate diets to bloat. Hikari Sinking Cichlid Excel (wheat germ and spirulina, 'for plant eating fish') is $15.79 per 12 oz at That Pet Place. Typical: three tubs a year for 12 fish; low two; high four. Tub counts are our estimate; pellets lose vitamins after about six months (Chewy, vet-reviewed). That Pet Place: Hikari Sinking Cichlid Excel Mini, 12 oz ($15.79); Seriously Fish: Labidochromis caeruleus (yellow lab: 36 x 18 in base, pH 7.7–8.6, vegetable diet, overcrowd mbuna); AquariumScience.org: Malawi bloat; Chewy: Betta Fish Care Guide (Julius Tepper, DVM, and Jessie Sanders, DVM; replace pellets every six months) | |
| Water conditioner refill | $11 | PetSmart's guide calls for 25–30% weekly water changes: 30% of 55 gallons weekly is about 860 gallons a year, or about 430 ml (14.5 oz) at 5 ml per 10 gallons, so one 16 oz bottle ($10.98) a year. High: two bottles for bigger changes. Chewy: API Stress Coat Aquarium Water Conditioner (8 oz $7.69, dosing); PetSmart: A Set-Up Guide for Your New African Cichlid | |
| Kit filter cartridges | $32 | Petco says to change filter media monthly. Top Fin Silenstream cartridges are $15.99 per 6-pack at PetSmart, so two packs a year; low one pack with rinsing; high three packs. PetSmart doesn't name the kit's filter model, so check the cartridge size. PetSmart: Top Fin Silenstream Filter Cartridges (Small and Large 6-packs $15.99); Petco: African Cichlid care sheet (29+ gal, 72–82°F, aragonite substrate, secure cover, up to 20 yr by species) | |
| AquaClear foam and carbon inserts | $9 2 times a year | For the second filter: Fluval Bio-Foam insert $3.49 and Active Carbon insert 3-pack $5.99 at PetSmart, modeled every 6 months (our assumption; rinsing foam in tank water stretches it). Low: foam only. PetSmart: filter media listing (Fluval Bio-Foam insert $3.49, Active Carbon insert 3-pack $5.99) | |
| Test strips or reagent top-up | $13 | One 25-count pack of API 5-in-1 strips a year alongside the master kit ($12.98 at Chewy). Low 4 ct $6.20; high 100 ct $24.98. Chewy: API 5 in 1 Aquarium Test Strips | |
| Replacement heater | $40 every 2 years | Bulk Reef Supply advises replacing heaters 'every 1–2 years in most cases' (cheap ones annually); modeled every 2 years. PetSmart's guide suggests about 5 W per gallon. Typical: Tetra HT heater for 40–55 gal, $39.99 at PetSmart. Low: Penn-Plax Cascade 150 W, $13.90 at Chewy. High: Aqueon Glass Adjustable 300 W, $54.95 at Chewy. Bulk Reef Supply: 5-Minute Aquarium Guide Ep. 12, Heaters (replacement interval); PetSmart: aquarium heaters (Tetra HT 40–55 gal $39.99); Chewy: fish supplies listing (Penn-Plax Cascade 150 W heater $13.90); Chewy: Aqueon Glass Adjustable Aquarium Heater (300 W $54.95) | |
| Electricity for heater and two filters | $155 | Rough estimate. PetSmart recommends 78–82°F. AquariumScience.org figures 'very roughly' 1.5 W per gallon to hold water 10°F above room temperature, so a 55-gallon heater averages ~82.5 W; each filter is taken as 7 W (the AquaClear 70's rating; PetSmart doesn't give the kit filter's). 96.5 W × 8,760 h = 845 kWh × $0.1831/kWh (EIA U.S. residential average, July 2026) = $154.78. Low: 5°F rise = $88.62. High: 20°F rise in a cold room = $287.11. The LED light is not counted. U.S. EIA Electric Power Monthly: average residential price, July 2026 (18.31 cents/kWh); AquariumScience.org: Aquarium electric cost (heater ~1.5 W per gallon for a 10°F rise); Aquarium Depot: Fluval AquaClear AC70 power filter (300 gph, 7 W); PetSmart: A Set-Up Guide for Your New African Cichlid | |
| Replacing fish lost to aggression | $16 | Petco calls African cichlids 'highly territorial', and PetSmart advises adding only 1–3 at a time and watching for aggression, so some fish are lost or have to be rehomed. Typical: two assorted African cichlids a year at $7.99 (PetSmart). High: two demasoni at $24.99 (Aquatics Unlimited). PetSmart: cichlids listing (Assorted African Cichlids $7.99); Aquatics Unlimited: African cichlids (Zebra OB $6.99–$24.99, Demasoni $16.99–$24.99, Rusty $9.99–$14.99, Hongi $12.99–$29.99); Petco: African Cichlid care sheet (29+ gal, 72–82°F, aragonite substrate, secure cover, up to 20 yr by species) | |
| Illness and injury, per year | |||
| Fish medications (and the rare vet visit) | $15 | Most illness is treated at home. Typical: Seachem MetroPlex 5 g ($8.14 at Bulk Reef Supply), the usual bloat treatment mixed into food, plus a 4-oz API Super Ick Cure ($6.99). Aquarium salt is left out because Chewy notes Malawi bloat seems more common where salt is used. High: one in-clinic fish vet visit ($50–$100, California Fish Vet) plus MetroPlex. Bulk Reef Supply: Seachem MetroPlex (5 g $8.14; dosing, mixing with food); Chewy: API Liquid Super Ick Cure (4 oz $6.99; 5 ml per 5 gal); Chewy: Dropsy (Edema), Malawi Bloat and Similar Syndromes; California Fish Vet (Jessie Sanders, DVM): Is paying a fish veterinarian worth the cost? | |
