What a fancy mouse really costs

Fancy mice cost about $5 each and are social, so this page prices two females, which usually get along (males fight). A suitable cage and starter kit come to about $175, and food, bedding and chews run roughly $300 a year for the pair. Vet care is usually only when something goes wrong, but tumors and skin disease are common and an exotics visit costs more than the mice.

Health costs to plan for

ConditionWhat it isTypical treatmentCost
Skin disease and mitesMerck: skin disease makes up over 25% of mouse cases; ulcerative dermatitis and the Myobia mite are common. Mites are treated with two ivermectin doses 10 days apart. SourceConsultation and recheck at Gentle Vets ($117.88 + $77.10) with medication$118–$195
Tumors (mammary and others)Merck: mammary adenocarcinomas in mice are nearly always malignant and often can't be removed; other tumors recur often after surgery. Chewy calls mice 'very prone to tumors'. SourceDiagnosis visit; the Vet Desk says one vet visit can cost up to $200. Surgery is often not advised.$118–$200
Respiratory infectionMerck: Sendai virus and Mycoplasma pulmonis are the most common causes; antibiotics relieve signs but don't clear infection. SourceConsultation and recheck at Gentle Vets ($117.88 + $77.10) with antibiotics$118–$195

What drives the cost

  • Priced for TWO female mice. Merck says males generally fight and are best kept singly or with females, while females usually share a cage well. Chewy warns never to house males together; a mixed pair will breed from 6 weeks old.
  • Bar spacing matters more than size: Chewy says no more than 1/4 in. Many cages sold for hamsters are wider, such as one Prevue model at 7/16 in, so confirm spacing before buying a mouse cage.
  • Merck says aquariums are unsuitable because poor airflow lets ammonia build up, and to avoid wire floors and untreated pine or aspen bedding.
  • Chewy's vet-reviewed care sheet says mice usually see a vet only when there's a problem, but a single visit can cost up to $200 (The Vet Desk), many times the price of the mouse.
  • Mice are short-lived: Merck gives an average of 18–24 months, so lifetime cost is mostly setup plus about two years of supplies.

Is it legal where you live?

Domesticated mice are legal pets throughout the US as far as sources show; California exempts domesticated mice from its restricted-animal rules. Hawaii lists domesticated mice as 'conditionally approved', which requires an import permit from its Plant Quarantine Branch before bringing them into the state.

Cities and counties can have their own rules. Check locally before you buy.
