What an Abyssinian really costs

An Abyssinian kitten from a US breeder costs about $900–$2,400, and the short coat costs almost nothing to keep. The spending goes on climbing furniture and toys for a very active cat. The cost risks are inherited: kidney amyloidosis, an anemia (PK deficiency) and two forms of blindness, three of which have $47 DNA tests to ask breeders about.

Health costs to plan for

ConditionWhat it isTypical treatmentCost
Amyloidosis (mainly kidney)Abnormal protein builds up in organs, most often the kidneys, and occurs more often in Abyssinians (PetMD). Signs include thirst, weight loss and vomiting; there is no DNA test, and it is managed like chronic kidney disease. SourcePumpkin's cost-to-treat range for Abyssinian amyloidosis$1,000–$5,000
Pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiencyRecessive inherited anemia; UC Davis says the mutation occurs in significant frequency in Abyssinians. Affected cats have bouts of lethargy, weakness and weight loss. CFA says testing lets breeders remove carriers. SourcePumpkin's cost-to-treat range, up to surgical treatment; avoided with a $47 UC Davis DNA test on the parents$500–$8,000
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA rdAc and Rdy)Two forms: rdAc is recessive, with blindness at about 3–5 years; Rdy is dominant and blinds kittens by about 7 weeks (UC Davis). Blind cats adapt indoors, but there's no treatment. SourcePumpkin's cost-to-treat range for Abyssinian PRA (diagnosis and supportive care); DNA tests $47 each, $95 with PK deficiency$200–$2,000
Dental (periodontal) diseaseCFA notes some breeders teach buyers to brush teeth to prevent gingivitis; Pumpkin lists periodontal disease among the breed's costly conditions. SourcePumpkin's cost-to-treat range for surgical treatment$400–$1,200

The yearly estimate includes an average of $286 for illness and injury. Insurance is available for this pet; turn it on in the calculator to compare.

What drives the cost

  • Breeder price: Catster (Oct 2026) puts a well-bred kitten at $900–$2,000, with some breeders charging $2,400 or more; PetMD gives $1,200–$2,800 and Pumpkin $900–$1,500.
  • Rescues and shelters charge $50–$300, but purebred Abys are uncommon there; Catster gives $50–$150.
  • CFA says Abys are 'constantly on the move' and fond of high places, so a 65-in cat tree ($113) is the typical setup, and toys wear out quickly.
  • Ask for parents' DNA results: UC Davis tests for PK deficiency, PRA rdAc and PRA Rdy cost $47 each or $95 for all three. Kidney amyloidosis has no DNA test.
  • Grooming is cheap: CFA says comb a few times a month, and baths are unnecessary unless showing. Some breeders teach owners to brush teeth to head off gingivitis.
  • Insurance costs more than for a domestic shorthair: MoneyGeek's Abyssinian premiums run $26/month for a kitten to $114 for a senior, vs $20–$69.
