What a Zebra Finch really costs

Zebra finches are among the cheapest birds to buy, about $50 each at PetSmart, but they live in pairs or groups, so plan on two birds and a flight cage: about $350 to start, birds included. Routine costs for the pair run about $410 a year (about $560 with an illness allowance), and more than half of that is avian-vet exams, because a vet charges per bird whatever its size.

Estimate for: A pair of zebra finches (two birds, ideally same-sex so they don't breed) sharing one flight cage; costs are for both birds, with food, vet visits and insurance priced for two. Space needed: Flight cage at least 18 x 18 x 30 in for the pair (VCA's minimum); longer is better, since finches exercise by flying, not climbing.

Health costs to plan for

ConditionWhat it isTypical treatmentCost
Macrorhabdus (avian gastric yeast, 'megabacteria')Merck says Macrorhabdus most often affects the stomach of smaller birds, including finches. The most successful treatment is oral amphotericin twice daily for 30 days, and shorter courses often fail; flockmates are usually treated together. SourceSick-bird consult ($118.39) and recheck ($77.10) at The Gentle Vets, fecal testing, and a 30-day course of medicine$200–$450
Tapeworms and other intestinal parasitesMerck lists finches among the pet birds most often infected with tapeworms (one dose of praziquantel) and reports trichomonas in passerine birds (7–14 days of medicine). SourceExam, fecal exam and a single praziquantel dose or a 1–2 week trichomonas course, plus a recheck$150–$300
Scaly leg mitesMerck says Knemidocoptes mites cause crusts on the legs of passerine birds; treatment is ivermectin or moxidectin repeated in 2 weeks, and wooden perches should be replaced. SourceExam and 2-week recheck (about $185 at The Gentle Vets), antiparasitic doses and new perches$185–$300

The yearly estimate includes an average of $150 for illness and injury. Insurance is available for this pet; turn it on in the calculator to compare.

What drives the cost

  • PetSmart says to keep at least two finches, and VCA says finches prefer the company of other finches, so these figures are for a pair. A mixed-sex pair will breed, which brings nests, extra food and chicks to rehome.
  • The birds are the cheap part: two from PetSmart cost about $100, while a 30-inch flight cage big enough for a pair is about $80 and the first vet visit for both is over $200.
  • Vet care dominates the budget: a Green Bay, WI clinic lists bird wellness exams from $107.62 each (Feb 2026), so a yearly checkup for two is about $215, more than the birds cost.
  • Food is cheap: VCA says a finch needs no more than about 1 teaspoon of seed a day, and a 5-lb bag of finch seed is about $18 on Chewy.
  • Finches live only about 4–6 years (VCA), so the lifetime cost of a pair is lower than for most pet birds.
  • No US rescue listing with a stated finch adoption fee was found; rescues do place finches, often as flocks, so check local bird rescues.

Is it legal where you live?

Zebra finches are legal to own without a permit in every US state. Hawaii regulates bird imports: bringing finches from the mainland needs a $20 Plant Quarantine import permit, a bird import permit, a vet health certificate and a 7-day mosquito-proof isolation before shipping (finches are exempt from individual leg-band ID).

Cities and counties can have their own rules. Check locally before you buy.

New-bird exams with an avian vet (both birds)$215$150–$300PetSmart says to have a vet see the bird within 14 days of purchase. Typical = 2 exams at $107.62 (The Gentle Vets, Green Bay, WI, Feb 2026). Low = 2 x $75, the minimum walk-in vet fee Bird Feeder Hub quotes; some clinics discount a second bird, but no published multi-bird rate was found. Finch seed and pellets (two birds)$45$15–$115LOW CONFIDENCE on quantity. VCA says pellets should be at least 70% of a finch's diet and seed no more than about 1 level teaspoon per bird a day; no source gives a yearly weight, so this assumes about 6–8 lb a year for two birds including spillage. Low: Wild Harvest Canary & Finch, 10 lb $10.59 (plus a small top-up). Typical: Higgins Vita Seed Finch 5 lb $17.99 plus two 2-lb bags of Higgins inTune Canary & Finch pellets at $14.99. Annual avian-vet exams (both birds)$215$150–$430VCA says finches need a checkup at least once a year. Typical = 2 exams at $107.62 (The Gentle Vets, Feb 2026). Low = 2 x $75 (Bird Feeder Hub's minimum walk-in fee). High = two checkups a year for both birds, as Bird Feeder Hub suggests. Many finch owners only see a vet when a bird is sick, which would cut this line. VCA: Finches: General (size, lifespan, cage minimum, yearly checkup); The Gentle Vets: Exotics pricing (bird wellness exam from $107.62, recheck $77.10, beak trim $93.53; Feb 2026); Bird Feeder Hub: How Much Does a Finch Cost? Typical assumes an occasional nail trim added to the yearly visit. VCA: Finches: General (size, lifespan, cage minimum, yearly checkup); The Gentle Vets: Exotics pricing (bird wellness exam from $107.62, recheck $77.10, beak trim $93.53; Feb 2026)
Illness and injury, per year
Illness and injury (yearly average, both birds)$150$50–$500No survey reports illness spending for finches. The Vet Desk puts bird emergencies at $100–$500+ a year; The Gentle Vets charges $118.39 for a sick-bird consult and $77.10 for a recheck (Feb 2026). Typical $150 assumes about one sick visit with medicine a year across the pair. Owners of $50 birds often decline costly workups, which keeps real spending near the low end. The Vet Desk: How Much Does a Bird Cost? (Jan 2026); The Gentle Vets: Exotics pricing (bird wellness exam from $107.62, recheck $77.10, beak trim $93.53; Feb 2026)
Insurance, per month
Nationwide Avian & Exotic premiums (two policies, one per bird)$26$20–$42Nationwide lists finches among covered birds and insures each pet on its own policy, so a pair means two premiums. Its bird page says premiums 'generally start at less than $21/month'; The Zebra's sample Nationwide quote for a 3-year-old macaw was $13.73/month with a $250 deductible and 70% reimbursement. Typical = 2 x about $13; high = 2 x $21. With birds this cheap to buy, many owners skip insurance and keep an emergency fund instead. Nationwide (petinsurance.com): Pet insurance plans for birds (canary, finch, parrotlet covered); The Zebra: Exotic Pet Insurance (Nationwide macaw quote $13.73/month, $250 deductible, 70%)
