What a Scottish Fold really costs

A Scottish Fold kitten from a US breeder costs about $1,000–$3,000. Day to day it costs about the same as a house cat, but the gene that folds the ears also affects cartilage and bone in every folded cat (osteochondrodysplasia). How bad it gets varies a lot; a cat with painful arthritis can need monthly pain injections at about $900–$2,100 a year, which this estimate doesn't include.

Health costs to plan for

ConditionWhat it isTypical treatmentCost
Osteochondrodysplasia (Scottish Fold disease)The dominant TRPV4 variant that folds the ears also disrupts cartilage and bone. UC Davis classes all folded cats as affected, with variable onset; RSPCA Australia and PetMD say every folded Fold has it to some degree, causing arthritis, short stiff legs, a thick stiff tail and lameness, visible on X-ray from about 7 weeks. Two-copy cats are severely affected. A 2021 blinded study of 10 single-copy cats found much milder X-ray changes than earlier, uncontrolled reports. There is no cure: treatment is lifelong pain relief, supplements, and rarely surgery or radiotherapy. SourcePer year for monthly Solensia (frunevetmab) arthritis injections: about $75 per dose for cats under 15.4 lb, $75–$175 per visit with clinic fees (ThePricer; MetLife gives $75–$115 a dose). X-rays and exams are extra.$900–$2,100
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)PetMD lists HCM for Scottish Folds; early cases show no signs, and diagnosis needs an echocardiogram. SourcePumpkin's cost-to-treat range for Scottish Fold heart disease$500–$3,000
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD)PetMD lists PKD, which leads to irreversible kidney damage, usually showing from age 7. UC Davis offers its PKD1 test together with the fold test ($71), so ask whether the parents tested negative. SourcePer year, managed like chronic kidney disease: prescription kidney diet ($40–$80/month) plus medications ($20–$60/month); ultrasound and bloodwork extra.$720–$1,680
Ear infectionsPumpkin lists ear infections among the breed's costly conditions; folded ears need regular checks for wax and debris. SourcePumpkin's cost-to-treat range for Scottish Fold ear infections$200–$350
Dental (periodontal) diseasePumpkin lists periodontal disease; cleanings with extractions under anesthesia are the usual fix. SourcePumpkin's cost-to-treat range for Scottish Fold periodontal disease$400–$1,200

The yearly estimate includes an average of $286 for illness and injury. Insurance is available for this pet; turn it on in the calculator to compare.

What drives the cost

  • Breeder price: Catster (Sept 2026) says expect $1,000–$3,000; Pumpkin gives $1,000–$2,000 and PetMD $1,000–$5,000.
  • The fold is a dominant TRPV4 mutation, and UC Davis classes every folded cat, with one copy or two, as affected. PetMD and RSPCA Australia say all folded Scottish Folds have the disease to some degree; a 2021 blinded X-ray study of 10 single-copy folds found much milder signs than earlier reports.
  • Never buy a kitten from two folded parents: two copies cause severe skeletal disease (UC Davis, RSPCA). CFA says responsible breeders only pair fold-eared cats with straight-eared cats; a UC Davis test costs $47, or $71 with the PKD test.
  • Watch for stiffness: CFA calls a stiff tail an early warning sign. PetMD lists hesitating to jump, sleeping more and poor grooming. There's no cure; monthly Solensia injections for arthritis pain cost about $75–$115 a dose before exam fees.
  • Breeding affected Folds is barred in Victoria, Australia, and Britain's GCCF stopped recognizing the breed in 1974 (RSPCA Australia). We found no US state law restricting ownership.
  • MoneyGeek's Scottish Fold premiums run $23/month for a kitten to $86 for a senior, vs $20–$69 for a domestic shorthair. Joint signs noticed before coverage starts would be pre-existing, so insure early if you insure.

Illness and injury, per year
Illness and injury (uninsured average)$286$145–$900Same basis as our house-cat page: APPA 2021–22 cat owners spent $201/yr on surgical vet visits, x1.421 BLS veterinarian-services CPI (2021 to 2026) = $286 (ValuePenguin's own inflation-adjusted 2024 estimate: $237). No breed-level spending data exists, so the breed's extra risks are shown under health instead; ongoing arthritis treatment for osteochondrodysplasia ($900–$2,100 a year) would sit on top of this. Low/high from Rover's emergency vet range $145–$900.
