What a Chihuahua really costs
A Chihuahua eats very little and needs no professional grooming, so day-to-day running costs are among the lowest of any breed. The money goes to the mouth and the knees: crowded teeth lead to extractions, and a slipped kneecap repair runs $1,500–$3,000 per leg. A 14–16 year lifespan also means many years of senior heart monitoring.

Health costs to plan for
Premiums are low in dollars because of size (Figo and Embrace estimates of roughly $19–$43 a month, per Insurify), but Trupanion data shows elevated claim rates for knees, extractions and heart failure, so the breed sits about average for a small dog.
| Condition | How it affects Chihuahuas | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patellar luxation | A 2016 VetCompass study found 4.9% of Chihuahuas in UK primary care had a diagnosis (odds 5.9 times crossbreds), and OFA lists 6.4% of 5,573 screened Chihuahuas as abnormal. Source | Surgical correction by a board-certified surgeon, per knee | $1,500–$3,000 |
| Fractured bones (puppies) | Trupanion claim data shows Chihuahua puppies are 25% more likely than the average dog to have a fracture claim, typically from falls or being stepped on. Source | Average cost of a fracture claim (Trupanion claim data) | $1,100–$2,700 |
| Dental disease and extractions | Trupanion reports Chihuahuas are four times as likely as the average dog to have an extraction claim, and VetCompass found 2.09 times the odds of periodontal disease versus crossbreds. Source | Professional cleaning under anesthesia ($350–$500 routine), rising to $1,500+ with extractions | $350–$1,500 |
| Mitral valve disease and congestive heart failure (seniors) | Trupanion claim data shows senior Chihuahuas are twice as likely as the average dog to have congestive heart failure or heart murmur claims. Source | Average annual cost of congestive heart failure care (Trupanion claim data) | $800–$1,400 |
The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $531 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.
What drives the cost of a Chihuahua
- Food is a rounding error: a 5 lb adult eats roughly a third of a cup of kibble a day, so even premium or fresh food stays cheap.
- Plan on a dental cleaning under anesthesia most years from middle age; Trupanion sees extraction claims at four times the average dog's rate.
- Fracture risk from falls and jumps is real in puppies; ramps, a sturdy carrier and avoiding high furniture are cheaper than a $1,100–$2,700 fracture repair.
- Avoid 'teacup' or under-3-lb marketing: it is a red flag for unhealthy breeding and often comes with higher prices and bigger vet bills (hypoglycemia, fragile bones).
- Small sweaters or coats are a practical buy for cold climates; the smooth coat gives little insulation.
