What a veiled chameleon really costs
$6,000 lifetime$1,470 first year$750 a year afterBreakdown
A veiled chameleon costs about $80 at PetSmart, but the tall screen cage, T5 UVB, basking lamps, plants and a misting system add roughly $320–$900 (typically near $580) before it comes home. After that, live insects, gut-load, supplements, a UVB tube and electricity run about $350 a year, and the yearly reptile-vet visit adds about $150. Females can lay eggs without a male, and egg binding is one of the costlier emergencies.

Health costs to plan for
| Condition | What it is | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metabolic bone disease | PetMD lists metabolic bone disease first among common veiled chameleon problems, calls for 10–12 hours of UVB a day and alternating calcium with and without D3, and lists swollen joints and lethargy among signs that need a vet. Source | Exam ($86–$118), X-rays, calcium/D3 therapy and rechecks ($77 each at Gentle Vet); estimate built from those fees | $150–$500 |
| Egg binding (dystocia) | PetMD lists dystocia (a stuck egg) among common problems. Females need a laying bin: Dubia.com suggests about 12 in wide by 8 in deep, and Furry Critter Network at least 12 in deep with moist sand or soil. Source | Furry Critter Network: surgery for egg binding runs $500 to well over $1,000 | $500–$1,200 |
| Respiratory infection | PetMD lists respiratory infections and recommends a screen cage rather than glass for ventilation. Furry Critter Network says a full workup with imaging, bloodwork, culture and injectable antibiotics easily reaches $400–$800. Source | Exam, imaging, bloodwork, culture and a course of injectable antibiotics | $400–$800 |
| Internal parasites | PetMD lists internal and external parasites; Dubia.com recommends a 3-month quarantine for new animals. A fecal test is $61 at Forever Vets, and Furry Critter Network says a simple medication course is about $20. Source | Exam and fecal test, dewormer ($20–$100) and a recheck (estimate from clinic fees) | $100–$300 |
The yearly estimate includes an average of $250 for illness and injury. Insurance is available for this pet; turn it on in the calculator to compare.
What drives the cost
- Water is the hidden setup cost: chameleons won't drink from a bowl (PetMD), so owners mist several times a day by hand or buy an automatic misting system ($135–$203) plus a dripper ($15).
- The cage is tall and mostly screen: a 24×24×48 in screen cage is about $127–$150, while a PVC-and-screen hybrid of the same size is $299–$349.
- Plan on a new T5 HO UVB tube about once a year (Zoo Med's 12-month guidance, about $25); PetMD's stricter every-six-months rule would double that line.
- Every insect gets dusted with calcium and fed a gut-load diet for 1–3 days first (ReptiFiles, PetMD), so calcium and multivitamin powders and gut-load are a small but permanent add-on to the insect bill.
- Juveniles eat as many insects as they will take every day until about 9 months (ReptiFiles, Dubia.com), and PetMD puts them at 12–20 small crickets a day, so year one's insect bill runs well above the adult figure here.
- PetSmart says veiled chameleons are for advanced reptile owners; they are solitary and don't like handling, so plan on one per cage.
Is it legal where you live?
Hawaii bans veiled chameleons outright: they are illegal to import, possess or transport, and harboring one to breed, sell or release can bring a felony charge and a fine of up to $200,000. New Jersey requires an exotic-animal possession permit for any reptile not on its exempt list, and no chameleons are on it. In Florida, veiled chameleons are an established invasive species, but they are not on FWC's prohibited or conditional lists, so pet ownership needs no special permit; releasing one is illegal and collecting them for sale requires a permit.
Restricted or banned in: Hawaii, New Jersey.
Cities and counties can have their own rules. Check locally before you buy.

| UVB tube replacement (ReptiSun 5.0 T5 HO, 22 in) | $25 | Zoo Med says to replace the T5 HO ReptiSun 5.0 every 12 months (Dubia.com listing), so this is set to once a year. PetMD's veiled chameleon sheet says to replace UVB bulbs every six months even if they still light, which would double this line. One 22 in 24 W tube: $24.98 at Chewy, $25.99 at Dubia.com. Dubia.com: Zoo Med T5 HO ReptiSun 5.0 UVB 22 in ($25.99; 'replace every 12 months'); Chewy: Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 T5-HO UVB lamp, 22 in, 24 W ($24.98); PetMD: Veiled Chameleon Care Sheet (Maria Zayas, DVM, Aug 2023) | |

| Illness and injury, per year | |||
| Unexpected vet bills (illness and injury) | $250 | Limited data: no US claims or survey data on chameleon illness spending was found. Furry Critter Network says a reptile respiratory workup reaches $400–$800, egg-binding surgery $500 to well over $1,000, and suggests saving $50 a month ($600 a year). PetMD lists dystocia, metabolic bone disease, mouth rot, parasites and respiratory infections as common. One $400–$800 episode every two to three years gives about $250 a year; $100 for a healthy male; $600 matches the reserve suggestion and suits females, which risk egg binding. | Insurance, per month | |||
| Nationwide Avian & Exotic (accident & illness) | $20 | Nationwide's exotic plan covers 'lizards, reptiles & frogs' and says premiums generally start under $21 a month; wellness coverage isn't offered and quotes are by phone. Species that need a state permit or are illegal to own are excluded, so New Jersey and Hawaii owners are ineligible. Chameleons aren't named, so confirm eligibility. MoreReptiles (2022) put chameleon insurance at $10–$17 a month, which sets the low end. Nationwide: Pet insurance for exotic pets; MoreReptiles: How Much Is a Chameleon? (updated Sept 2022) | |
