What platies really cost
Every figure on this page is for a group of 6 platies.
Costs for 6 fish:$1,000 lifetime$480 first year$180 a year afterBreakdown
Six platies cost only about $15–$30, and a 20-gallon kit on a stand with gravel, plants and test strips typically runs about $325. After that, expect around $175 a year for filter cartridges, food, a heater every year or two, electricity and the odd medication. Platies tolerate cooler water than most tropical fish, which keeps the power bill low, but a mixed-sex group will produce fry about every month.

Health costs to plan for
| Condition | What it is | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ich (white spot disease) | A contagious parasite usually brought in with new fish; white specks and flashing against decor. Chewy and Petco both list it among common platy problems, and Seriously Fish warns that many mass-bred platies are not very hardy. Source | Ich medication for the whole tank (API Super Ick Cure 2 × 4 oz, $12.58) plus water changes; a mobile fish vet tank visit is about $200 plus mileage | $13–$213 |
| Fin rot | Ragged, fraying fins from bacterial infection, usually after poor water quality or nipping. Listed by Petco and Chewy for platies; Petco's first steps are better water, quarantine and an aquatic vet if needed. Source | Water changes, then an antibiotic such as Seachem KanaPlex 5 g ($8.14), which its maker says works on fin rot; vet tank visit about $200 | $8–$208 |
| Columnaris ("cottonmouth") | A bacterial infection that causes yellowish-brown mouth growths, pale "saddleback" bands and gill damage. The Southern Regional Aquaculture Center notes crowding, high ammonia or nitrite, rough handling and water at the warm end of a fish's range all favor it, so an overpopulated platy tank is at risk. Source | Correct crowding and water quality; SRAC advises a fish health professional for treatment decisions (mobile fish vet tank visit about $200 plus mileage) | $0–$200 |
| Fungal and water-mold infections | Cottony white-to-brown patches that follow injury, poor water, overcrowding or chasing by males; Petco lists fungus among platy problems. Source | Fix water quality and crowding, then measured aquarium salt (1–2 g/L; API 65 oz, $12.48); vet diagnosis recommended for severe cases | $12–$213 |
The yearly estimate includes an average of $25 for illness and injury. Mainstream U.S. pet insurers do not cover aquarium fish; exotic-pet policies such as Nationwide's avian and exotic plan are aimed at birds, reptiles and small mammals. Budget for medications and the rare fish-vet visit yourself.
What drives the cost
- Platies are content in cooler water than guppies or mollies. Seriously Fish gives 68–79°F and Chewy 70–82°F, so in a typical heated home the heater barely runs and we price electricity at only about $35 a year for 20 gallons. Aquarium Co-op says variatus platies need no heater at all at room temperature.
- Group and tank: Petco recommends 6 or more with 2–4 females per male, and says a larger tank than 10 gallons is needed for a group. Seriously Fish wants a 24 x 12 in footprint, the size of the 20-gallon kit priced here.
- Expect babies. Chewy puts gestation at 24–30 days, Aquarium Co-op says a female can drop 20–50 fry a month, and Seriously Fish records broods of up to 80. Adults eat many of them, so live plants decide how many survive. Aquarium Co-op suggests giving surplus fry to friends or a local fish store; a second tank is the expensive alternative.
- Platies want moderately hard, alkaline water (Seriously Fish: pH 7.0–8.2, 10–30 dGH). If your tap water is soft you may need crushed coral or a mineral additive, which this estimate does not price.
- Medications are cheap; vets are not. A two-bottle pack of ich treatment is $12.58 at Chewy, while a mobile fish vet's tank visit runs about $200 plus mileage at California Fish Vet.
Is it legal where you live?
Platies are legal to own throughout the U.S. and sold at national chains; they are not on the federal injurious-wildlife list. Released platies have established wild populations in Florida, California, Nevada, Colorado, Montana, Hawaii and Puerto Rico according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, so never release them or surplus fry.

| Aquarium stand for a 20-gallon tank | $104 | A filled 20-gallon tank is heavy enough to need a stand or furniture rated for it. Typical: TitanEze steel stand for 11–30 gal tanks, from $104.39 at PetSmart. High: Top Fin Bourbon Oak 20–37 gal cabinet, $179.99. Low: $0 if you already own sturdy furniture that fits the 24 x 13 in footprint. PetSmart: aquarium stands (TitanEze 11–30 gal from $104.39, Top Fin Bourbon Oak 20–37 gal $179.99) | |
| Gravel or sand | $22 | Chewy's platy care sheet lists Pure Water Pebbles coated gravel at $5.49 per 5-lb bag. Typical: 4 bags (20 lb) for a 24 x 12 in floor = $21.96; low: 2 bags for a thin layer = $10.98; high: one 20-lb bag of CaribSea Crystal River sand, $23.79 (Chewy). Bag counts are our estimate. Chewy: Platy Fish Care Guide (10-gallon minimum, 70–82°F, 3–4 year lifespan, product prices); Chewy: Molly Fish Care Sheet (CaribSea sand 20 lb $23.79, siphon vacuums, heaters, salt) | |
| Live plants (cover for fry) | $38 | Aquarium Co-op says adults eat fry and recommends plants or decor for cover. Prices from Chewy's platy care sheet: typical, a 3-count of Echinodorus ruffle sword plants, $38.31; low, one Anubias petite on nano driftwood, $15.98; high, both. Chewy: Platy Fish Care Guide (10-gallon minimum, 70–82°F, 3–4 year lifespan, product prices); Aquarium Co-op: Care Guide for Platy Fish ($2–$4 each; 10–20 gallons; 3–6 per group) | |
| Water conditioner (first bottle) | $8 | API Stress Coat 8 oz, $7.69 at Chewy (5 ml per 10 gallons; treats up to 470 gallons). Low: 1 oz $2.28. High: 16 oz $10.98. Chewy: API Stress Coat Aquarium Water Conditioner (1 oz $2.28, 8 oz $7.69, 16 oz $10.98; 5 ml per 10 gal) | |
| Water test strips | $25 | Petco advises testing water weekly, so a 100-count tube of API 5-in-1 strips ($24.98 at Chewy) covers about two years. Low: a 4-count ($6.98) to get through cycling. The strips read pH, nitrite, nitrate and hardness but not ammonia. Chewy: API 5 in 1 Aquarium Test Strips, 100 ct ($24.98); Chewy: API 5 in 1 Aquarium Test Strips, 4 ct ($6.98; no ammonia test); Petco: Platy Care Guide (72–82°F, groups of 6+, 10–25% water change every 2–4 weeks, filter media monthly, test weekly) | |
| Gravel vacuum (siphon) | $8 | Chewy recommends 10–25% weekly water changes with a gravel vacuum. SunGrow siphon vacuum $7.70; Aqueon siphon with priming bulb $19.79 (high), both on Chewy's molly care sheet. The kit includes a net. Chewy: Molly Fish Care Sheet (CaribSea sand 20 lb $23.79, siphon vacuums, heaters, salt); Chewy: Platy Fish Care Guide (10-gallon minimum, 70–82°F, 3–4 year lifespan, product prices) | |
| Every year | |||
| Flakes or pellets plus freeze-dried treats | $28 | Platies are unfussy omnivores (Seriously Fish); Chewy says feed adults once or twice a day, only what they finish in a few minutes. Prices from Chewy's platy care sheet. Low: a small 0.36-oz jar of API Tropical Flakes ($2.98) every three months, so it stays fresh = $11.92. Typical adds 2 tubs of Omega One freeze-dried bloodworms ($7.99) = $27.90. High: 2 jars of Omega One Super Color pellets 6.5 oz ($11.69) + 4 bloodworm tubs = $55.34. Quantities are our estimate for six 2–3 in fish. Chewy: Platy Fish Care Guide (10-gallon minimum, 70–82°F, 3–4 year lifespan, product prices); Seriously Fish: Xiphophorus maculatus (Platy) | |
| Water conditioner refill | $8 every 1.5 years | Chewy advises 10–25% water changes weekly. At 25% a week, 20 gallons need about 260 gallons of new water a year; at 5 ml per 10 gallons that is 130 ml, so an 8 oz bottle ($7.69, treats 470 gallons) lasts about 1.5–2 years. High: 16 oz ($10.98). Chewy: Platy Fish Care Guide (10-gallon minimum, 70–82°F, 3–4 year lifespan, product prices); Chewy: API Stress Coat Aquarium Water Conditioner (1 oz $2.28, 8 oz $7.69, 16 oz $10.98; 5 ml per 10 gal) | |
| Filter cartridges | $32 | Petco advises changing filter media monthly. Top Fin Silenstream large cartridges (fit Silenstream 20, 30, 40 and 75 filters; the 20-gal Captivate kit ships with a Silenstream PF20) are $15.99 per 6-pack at PetSmart, so two packs a year = $31.98. Low: one pack, rinsing cartridges in tank water between changes. PetSmart doesn't name the Essentials kit's filter model, so check the cartridge size before buying. PetSmart: Top Fin Silenstream Large Filter Cartridges, 6 ct ($15.99; fit Silenstream 20, 30, 40, 75); Petco: Platy Care Guide (72–82°F, groups of 6+, 10–25% water change every 2–4 weeks, filter media monthly, test weekly) | |
| Test strips | $25 every 2 years | Weekly testing (Petco's advice) uses a 100-count tube of API 5-in-1 strips ($24.98 at Chewy) about every two years. Low: a 4-count ($6.98) every two years for occasional checks. Chewy: API 5 in 1 Aquarium Test Strips, 100 ct ($24.98); Petco: Platy Care Guide (72–82°F, groups of 6+, 10–25% water change every 2–4 weeks, filter media monthly, test weekly) | |
| Replacement heater (100 W) | $33 every 1.5 years | Bulk Reef Supply advises replacing heaters every 1–2 years, and $30–$40 heaters yearly, because a stuck heater can cook or chill the fish; modeled every 1.5 years. Chewy's 3–5 W per gallon rule gives 60–100 W for 20 gallons. Typical and low: Marineland Precision 100 W, $32.97; high: Fluval M 100 W, $35.99 (both Chewy). Bulk Reef Supply: 5-Minute Aquarium Guide Ep. 12, Heaters (replace every 1–2 years; $30–$40 heaters yearly); Chewy: Molly Fish Care Sheet (CaribSea sand 20 lb $23.79, siphon vacuums, heaters, salt); Chewy: Platy Fish Care Guide (10-gallon minimum, 70–82°F, 3–4 year lifespan, product prices) | |
| Electricity for heater and filter | $35 | Rough estimate. AquariumScience.org figures about 1.5 W per gallon to hold water 10°F above room temperature. Because platies are comfortable at the low end of Petco's 72–82°F range, we assume a typical 5°F lift: 20 gal × 0.75 W = 15 W, plus a filter taken as 7 W (an AquaClear 50's rating at 120 V; PetSmart doesn't give the kit filter's). 22 W × 8,760 h = 193 kWh × $0.1831/kWh (EIA U.S. residential average, July 2026) = $35.29. Low: room already at 72°F, filter only = 7 W = $11.23. High: 15°F lift in a cold room = 52 W = $83.40. The LED light is not counted. U.S. EIA Electric Power Monthly: average residential price, July 2026 (18.31 cents/kWh); AquariumScience.org: Aquarium electric cost (heater ~1.5 W per gallon for a 10°F rise); Aquarium Depot: Fluval AquaClear AC50 power filter (20–50 gal, 200 gph, 7 W at 120 V); Petco: Mixed MM Platy ($2.99; 10-gallon minimum; 72–82°F; pH 7–8.3) | |
| Plant and decor refresh | $16 | Replacing or adding a plant a year (Anubias petite on driftwood $15.98 at Chewy); high replaces the 3-count sword plants ($38.31). Many owners spend nothing. Chewy: Platy Fish Care Guide (10-gallon minimum, 70–82°F, 3–4 year lifespan, product prices) | |
| Illness and injury, per year | |||
| Fish medications (and the rare vet visit) | $25 | Most platy illness is treated at home for the whole tank. Typical: a two-bottle pack of API Super Ick Cure ($12.58 at Chewy) plus API freshwater aquarium salt 65 oz ($12.48, listed on Chewy's molly care sheet) = $25.06. High adds Seachem KanaPlex 5 g ($8.14, Bulk Reef Supply) and one mobile fish vet tank visit, about $200 plus mileage at California Fish Vet = $233.20. Few owners take $3 fish to a vet. Chewy: API Liquid Super Ick Cure, 4 oz, bundle of 2 ($12.58); Chewy: Molly Fish Care Sheet (CaribSea sand 20 lb $23.79, siphon vacuums, heaters, salt); Bulk Reef Supply: Seachem KanaPlex, 5 g ($8.14; dropsy, popeye, fin rot); California Fish Vet (Jessie Sanders, DVM): Fish Veterinary Services (tank package about $200 plus mileage) | |
