What land snails really cost
Every figure on this page is for a trio of land snails.
Costs for 3 snails:$210 lifetime$120 first year$40 a year afterBreakdown
Three legally obtained land snails cost $0 if you find a locally established species such as the brown garden snail, or about $15–$45 from an in-state keeper, and a plastic terrarium, coconut-fiber substrate, cuttlebones and a spray bottle add about $35–$75 (typically about $60). Upkeep is mostly kitchen produce, fresh substrate and calcium, roughly $45 a year. The legal limits matter more than the price: giant African land snails are illegal in the US, USDA requires a permit to move most land snails across state lines, and Florida and Hawaii bar bringing in plant-feeding snails.

Estimate for: Three land snails of a species that is legal and already present where you live, typically brown garden snails (Cornu aspersum) found locally or bought from an in-state keeper (such as the milk snails sold within Texas), kept at room temperature in a plastic Exo Terra Faunarium on damp coconut fiber with a cuttlebone for calcium. It does not cover giant African land snails, which are illegal in the US, or snails shipped across state lines, which need a USDA permit. Space needed: A small plastic terrarium; Minibeast Wildlife's minimum is about 8 × 8 in of floor and 4 in high, and an Exo Terra Faunarium Large (14½ × 8½ in floor) gives three snails more room.

Health costs to plan for
| Condition | What it is | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drying out, overheating or chilling | Minibeast Wildlife says a snail that rarely leaves its shell may be too hot, too cold or too dry, and recommends daily misting to hold 60–80% humidity at 15–26°C (59–79°F). UC IPM notes garden snails seal themselves in with a papery membrane in hot, dry weather. Source | Mist more often and move the enclosure out of sun or drafts; a spray bottle is $4.99 | $0–$5 |
| Calcium shortage and weak shells | The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee field station says snails build new shell from calcium they get from food and calcium-rich materials, and hatchlings eat their own eggshells to harden their first shell. Captive snails rely on a cuttlebone. Source | Keep a cuttlebone in the enclosure at all times ($13.99 for six at Chewy) | $14 |
| Unwanted eggs and overpopulation | Snails are hermaphrodites, so any two can breed (Minibeast Wildlife), and UC IPM says brown garden snails lay about 80 eggs per clutch up to six times a year. Extra snails cannot legally be released or shipped out of state, so egg clutches need removing. Source | Check the substrate for egg clusters and dispose of them, or change the substrate (Eco Earth 3-pack $10.98–$16.99) | $0–$17 |
The yearly estimate includes an average of $0 for illness and injury. No US insurer covers snails. Nationwide's exotic plan lists birds, rabbits, mini pigs and goats, lizards/reptiles/frogs, guinea pigs, and ferrets and small mammals, and says any species not listed is ineligible.
What drives the cost
- The snails themselves are often free: Texas Monthly profiled a keeper whose first snail arrived on a nursery plant, and an Austin breeder sells milk snails within Texas for about $5–$15 each. Buying from out of state is the expensive and usually illegal route, because USDA requires a PPQ 526 permit to move plant-feeding snails between states, and giant African land snails are illegal in the US however they are advertised (USDA seized them from Wisconsin classrooms in 2003–04, according to UW–Milwaukee's field station).
- A plastic Faunarium is all the housing needed: Exo Terra's Medium is $12.28 on sale at Chewy and the Large is $24.99. Snails need no heat or light; Minibeast Wildlife gives 59–79°F (15–26°C), so electricity is $0 in a normal home.
- Calcium is the one supply snails must have for their shells: Minibeast Wildlife and Texas Monthly's keepers use a cuttlebone, and a six-pack is $13.99 at Chewy.
- Food is mostly kitchen produce: Minibeast Wildlife lists cucumber, carrot, lettuce and sweet potato, replaced every two days. Romaine averaged $3.29 a pound in US cities in August 2026 (BLS), so even buying it specially costs little.
- Snails breed readily: they are hermaphrodites, and UC IPM says brown garden snails lay about 80 eggs per clutch, up to six times a year. Plan to remove eggs from the substrate rather than ending up with dozens of snails you cannot legally release or ship.
- Wash your hands after handling: CDC says snails and slugs can carry rat lungworm, a parasite that can cause a rare meningitis, mainly through eating raw or undercooked snails, and USDA advises washing hands after touching snails.
Is it legal where you live?
Giant African land snails (Lissachatina/Achatina) are illegal in the US: USDA APHIS says not to buy or keep them, and achatinine snails are banned from import and interstate movement. For other plant-feeding land snails, APHIS requires a PPQ 526 permit to import them or move them between states, and permitted snails must never be released, so keep only a species that is legal and already present in your state, bought or found in-state. Florida prohibits bringing in any plant-feeding snail or slug from outside the state. Hawaii bans importing any animal not on its lists, and no land snails are listed. Never release pet snails or dump their substrate outdoors.
Restricted or banned in: Florida, Hawaii.

| Cuttlebones for calcium (6-pack) | $14 | Minibeast Wildlife gives cuttlebone as the calcium source, and the Texas keeper profiled by Texas Monthly puts two in each enclosure. Birds LOVE natural cuttlebone, 7½–8 in, 6-count (labeled for birds, tortoises and snails), $13.99 at Chewy. Chewy: Birds LOVE Natural Cuttlebone Calcium Block for Birds, Tortoise & Snails, 6 count ($13.99); Minibeast Wildlife: Care Guide, Garden Snails (Cantareus aspersus); Texas Monthly: All Hail the Mighty Snail (July 31, 2025; milk snails $5–$15 each; interstate shipping needs a USDA APHIS permit) | |
| Spray bottle for daily misting | $5 | Minibeast Wildlife: mist the substrate once a day to hold 60–80% humidity. Josh's Frogs 16 oz spray bottle, $4.99. Low: a clean household spray bottle. Josh's Frogs: Spray Bottle, 16 oz ($4.99); Minibeast Wildlife: Care Guide, Garden Snails (Cantareus aspersus) | |
| Every year | |||
| Fresh vegetables and fruit | $20 | Minibeast Wildlife: cucumber, carrot, lettuce, sweet potato and other produce, replaced every two days. Priced on romaine at the BLS US city average of $3.29/lb (August 2026). High: about ¼ lb a week bought for the snails (13 lb × $3.29). Typical: about half that bought, the rest kitchen trimmings. Low: trimmings only. The amount eaten is an estimate; no source gives a rate for three snails. Minibeast Wildlife: Care Guide, Garden Snails (Cantareus aspersus); FRED / BLS: Average Price, Lettuce, Romaine, per lb, US City Average (APU0000FL2101; $3.286, Aug 2026) | |
| Fresh substrate | $17 | Damp substrate with leftover food needs changing; Minibeast Wildlife says to replace food every two days. A Faunarium Large floor filled 2 in deep is about 4 L, so one Eco Earth brick (7–8 L) covers a change with some to spare. Typical: three changes a year from one 3-pack at Petco ($16.99). Low: the PetSmart 3-pack ($10.98). High: two Petco 3-packs. The change frequency is an estimate. Petco: Zoo Med Eco Earth Compressed Coconut Fiber Expandable Substrate, 3 pack ($16.99; 7–8 L per brick); PetSmart: Zoo Med Eco Earth Expandable Reptile Substrate Value Pack, 3 bricks ($10.98); Minibeast Wildlife: Care Guide, Garden Snails (Cantareus aspersus) | |
| Replacement cuttlebones (6-pack) | $14 every 2 years | One $13.99 six-pack at Chewy every two years, assuming one or two cuttlebones in use at a time (as Texas Monthly's keeper does) and replaced as they are eaten or get moldy. The replacement rate is an estimate. Chewy: Birds LOVE Natural Cuttlebone Calcium Block for Birds, Tortoise & Snails, 6 count ($13.99); Texas Monthly: All Hail the Mighty Snail (July 31, 2025; milk snails $5–$15 each; interstate shipping needs a USDA APHIS permit) | |
| Electricity | $0 | None: Minibeast Wildlife gives 15–26°C (59–79°F), normal room temperature, so no heat or lighting is needed. Minibeast Wildlife: Care Guide, Garden Snails (Cantareus aspersus) | |
| Illness and injury, per year | |||
| Unexpected costs (replacing a snail) | $0 | Limited data: no data exist. Snails are not taken to vets in practice; problems such as drying out or overheating are fixed at home with misting and a cooler spot (Minibeast Wildlife). Typical assumes no loss or a free local replacement; high is one in-state milk snail at $15 (Texas Monthly). Not vet-priced, so not scaled by region. Minibeast Wildlife: Care Guide, Garden Snails (Cantareus aspersus); Texas Monthly: All Hail the Mighty Snail (July 31, 2025; milk snails $5–$15 each; interstate shipping needs a USDA APHIS permit) | |
