What a Portuguese Water Dog really costs

A Portuguese Water Dog's biggest recurring bill is the groomer: the curly or wavy coat keeps growing and mats unless it is clipped about every 4–6 weeks. Breeder prices are high for a medium-size dog because PWDCA breeders run several DNA tests, but the breed's orthopedic record is good. The health risk to budget for is Addison's disease, which turns into a lifelong prescription if it shows up.

Health costs to plan for

No insurer publishes PWD premiums, so the tier comes from the health profile: low OFA failure rates for hips (12.0% dysplastic) and elbows (2.0% abnormal), offset by Addison's disease, a heritable lifelong condition Embrace rates high risk.

ConditionHow it affects Portuguese Water DogsTypical treatmentCost
Hip dysplasiaThe PWDCA calls canine hip dysplasia the primary orthopedic disease of the breed; 12.0% of 12,087 PWD hip X-rays sent to OFA were graded dysplastic. SourceDiagnosis and treatment, from long-term pain management to corrective surgery (Embrace estimate)$1,500–$6,000
Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism)A UC Davis pedigree study found Addison's heritable in PWDs (heritability 0.49), and the PWDCA says median age at diagnosis is 4–6 years; affected dogs need hormone replacement for life. SourceEmergency stabilization of an Addisonian crisis plus diagnosis and ongoing hormone medication (Embrace estimate)$1,000–$5,000
Follicular dysplasia / genetic hair lossEmbrace rates follicular dysplasia a high risk for the breed, and the PWDCA's dermatology committee tracks genetic hair loss and improper coat through its Health & Litter Log. SourceSkin biopsy diagnosis and topical/medicated-bath management (Embrace estimate)$200–$500

The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $650 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.

What drives the cost of a Portuguese Water Dog

  • Plan on 8–13 professional clips a year. PetMD's vet sources recommend a groomer every 4–6 weeks, and Dogster puts professional grooming at $50–$100 a month.
  • Low shedding is the selling point, but it means hair never falls out on its own. Skipping clips leads to matting, and a matted coat usually has to be shaved down at extra cost.
  • Addison's disease usually appears at 4–6 years, after puppy insurance has typically started. Enrolling before any symptoms keeps the lifelong hormone treatment covered.
  • The PWDCA says the breed needs more exercise than many others, so an owner who works long hours may need a dog walker or daycare.
  • Few PWDs reach shelters, so most buyers pay breeder prices. Before paying, ask to see the parents' OFA hip results and their DNA results for GM1 storage disease and juvenile DCM.

PetMD gives $1,500–$2,500 and iHeartDogs' 2026 regional asks run $2,000–$4,000 (highest in the West); a PWDCA breeder doing OFA hips, CAER eyes and DNA tests (GM1, PRA, juvenile DCM) prices at or above the middle. Few PWDs reach shelters; PWDCA Rescue places surrendered dogs through regional volunteers and does not publish a fee, so the adoption range is Dogster's general shelter figure.
