What a Bulldog really costs

The Bulldog is one of the most expensive dogs to keep healthy: VetCompass data show sharply higher odds of skin fold infections, cherry eye and airway disease, and the median lifespan is under 10 years. Puppy prices stay high because most litters need a C-section, so you pay a premium at purchase and again at the vet.

Health costs to plan for

MoneyGeek's 2026 table ranks the English Bulldog 8th most expensive of 161 breeds at $100 a month for a middle-aged dog, versus $61 for a Labrador, reflecting airway, skin, eye and joint claims.

ConditionHow it affects BulldogsTypical treatmentCost
Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)A 2022 RVC VetCompass study of 2,662 UK English Bulldogs found 19.2 times the odds of BOAS compared with other dogs. SourceAirway surgery (soft palate resection and nostril widening), single or staged procedures$1,200–$5,200
Hip dysplasiaPetMD's veterinarian authors describe hip dysplasia as extremely common in Bulldogs; severe cases need surgery. SourceSurgical treatment of hip dysplasia, up to hip replacement$1,500–$7,000
Skin fold dermatitis and allergiesThe same VetCompass study found 38.1 times the odds of skin fold dermatitis, the breed's highest-risk disorder; Embrace rates the risk 'very high'. SourceDiagnosis and treatment of fold dermatitis, from medicated wipes and antibiotics to surgical fold removal$300–$2,500
Cherry eye (prolapsed third-eyelid gland)VetCompass found 26.8 times the odds of cherry eye in English Bulldogs versus other dogs. SourceAverage Trupanion claim range for cherry eye in English Bulldog puppies$700–$1,100
Entropion (inward-rolling eyelids)VetCompass found entropion in 3.9% of English Bulldogs, 11.6 times the odds of other dogs. SourceEyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), general practice to ophthalmologist$300–$1,500

The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $1,105 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.

What drives the cost of a Bulldog

  • Fold care is a weekly line item: medicated wipes and drying powder for face, tail pocket and body wrinkles, plus vet visits when folds get infected ($300-$2,500 per episode per Embrace).
  • Evans and Adams (2010) found 86% of Bulldog litters in a UK survey were born by C-section; an emergency C-section can cost $1,500-$4,000, a cost breeders pass on.
  • Plan for climate control and a cooling mat; AKC warns Bulldogs can overheat even in mild weather, and heatstroke care is emergency-priced.
  • Rescue is a cheaper route: Bulldog Club of America rescue fees average $450-$800, versus $1,500-$4,500 from a breeder, though many rescue dogs arrive with existing medical needs.
  • AKC notes anesthesia is riskier in flat-faced breeds; ask whether your vet's brachycephalic protocol changes the quote for dentals and spays before you book.
