What a Newfoundland really costs

Newfoundlands are calm, moderate-exercise dogs, so their costs come from size and coat rather than activity. A 130-150 lb male needs giant-dose medication, a thick coat that mats without frequent brushing or professional grooming, and nearly 1 in 4 dogs OFA screens has hip or elbow dysplasia.

Health costs to plan for

Joint disease and bloat push Lemonade's Newfoundland rate from $60-$65 a month at age 1 to $115-$120 by age 6, above most large breeds.

Heart disease (including subaortic stenosis)AKC lists cardiac disease among breed screenings; 4.6% of 1,680 OFA advanced cardiac exams in Newfoundlands were abnormal. SourceCardiac exam, echocardiogram and heart medication (Lemonade average cost for heart-valve disease in Newfoundlands)$300–$1,200

The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $1,559 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.

What drives the cost of a Newfoundland

  • The NCA notes giant breeds need more anesthesia and that medication is dispensed by weight, so routine surgeries and prescriptions cost more than for a Labrador.
  • AKC says spayed and neutered Newfs shed year-round and need brushing several times a week; many owners budget a professional bath and blowout every 6-8 weeks.
  • Heavy drooling and a coat that holds water mean extra towels, frequent floor cleaning and a high-velocity dryer for home grooming.
  • The NCA estimates about one 40-pound bag of food a month for an adult, more for a growing puppy or with premium food.
  • Ask breeders about cystinuria DNA testing; OFA finds 12.2% of tested Newfoundlands are carriers, and affected dogs can form bladder stones.
