What a German Shepherd Dog really costs
A German Shepherd's biggest money risk is orthopedic: roughly one in five screened GSDs has dysplastic hips, and a bilateral hip replacement runs $7,000–$12,000. Day to day, the breed needs serious exercise and structured training, so budget for classes, sport or daycare rather than just walks, plus a vacuum that can keep up with year-round shedding.

Health costs to plan for
OFA hip (20.4% dysplastic) and elbow (18.7% abnormal) rates are among the highest of popular breeds, and bloat, degenerative myelopathy and perianal fistula are all expensive, so premiums run above an average large dog.
| Condition | How it affects German Shepherd Dogs | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hip and elbow dysplasia | OFA screening data show 20.4% of submitted German Shepherd hip X-rays rated dysplastic (146,890 evaluations) and 18.7% of elbows abnormal (68,358 evaluations), among the higher rates of any common breed. Source | Bilateral total hip replacement (both hips); other hip surgeries run $1,500–$3,000 per hip and elbow surgery $1,500–$4,000 per elbow | $7,000–$12,000 |
| Gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat) | AKC flags bloat as a life-threatening risk owners of this deep-chested breed should learn to recognize; no breed-specific incidence figure was found in the sources checked. Source | Emergency decompression and surgery (derotation and gastropexy) with hospitalization | $1,500–$7,500 |
| Degenerative myelopathy | In OFA DNA testing, 14.8% of German Shepherds tested were at-risk (two copies of the SOD1 mutation) and 29.0% carriers (18,267 dogs); Cornell lists the breed among those most affected. Source | Diagnosis and supportive care (Embrace's cost estimate for DM, published on its Old English Sheepdog page); there is no cure | $2,000–$4,000 |
| Perianal fistula | Embrace notes German Shepherds are almost exclusively affected by this chronic, painful anal-area disease. Source | Surgical excision by a board-certified surgeon; long-term immunosuppressive drugs alternatively run $200–$500 a month | $2,000–$5,000 |
The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $992 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.
What drives the cost of a German Shepherd Dog
- Ask for OFA or PennHIP hip and elbow results on both parents; with 20.4% of screened GSD hips rated dysplastic, paying more for a health-tested litter is the cheapest orthopedic insurance you can buy.
- A 65–90 lb working breed puts you in the large-dog bracket for food, preventives, spay/neuter and insurance, and needs an XL crate and bed.
- AKC calls the breed one that needs lots of exercise and mental work; owners without time to provide it end up paying for daycare, a walker or a sport club on a recurring basis.
- Grooming is mostly DIY brushing, but the heavy twice-yearly coat blow makes a professional bath and deshed every few months worthwhile for many owners.
- Ask your vet about a preventive gastropexy at spay/neuter time; it is far cheaper than a $1,500–$7,500 bloat emergency.
