What a crested gecko really costs
A crested gecko costs about $60–$175 for a normal pet-quality animal, and a tall 18×18×36 in terrarium with a small heat bulb, forest-strength UVB, plants and a feeding ledge adds about $350–$640 (typically near $460). After that it is one of the cheaper reptiles to feed, because adults live on a powdered fruit diet instead of a steady supply of live insects; the biggest single yearly item is the reptile-vet checkup (about $150).

Health costs to plan for
| Condition | What it is | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metabolic bone disease | ReptiFiles: caused by calcium or vitamin D3 deficiency; signs include a wavy tail, soft jaw, curved limbs, lethargy and appetite loss. Minor cases improve with calcium, D3 and UVB; severe cases or no improvement after a couple of weeks need a vet. Source | Exam ($86–$118), X-rays, calcium/D3 therapy and rechecks ($77 each at Gentle Vet); estimate built from those fees | $150–$500 |
| Intestinal parasites and GI impaction | PetMD lists intestinal parasites, GI impactions and diarrhea among common crested gecko problems, with discharge around the vent, lethargy and refusing food as warning signs. Source | Exam and fecal test ($58–$61), dewormer, and a recheck; X-rays if impaction is suspected (estimate from clinic fees) | $100–$300 |
| Retained shed (dysecdysis) | PetMD: shed stuck around the toes, especially with swollen toes, needs a vet visit; low humidity is the usual cause. Source | Exam ($86–$118) and assisted removal; a recheck ($77) if toes are damaged | $80–$200 |
| Eye and respiratory infections | PetMD flags eyes that are swollen, sunken, stuck shut or discharging; Furry Critter Network says a full respiratory workup with imaging, bloodwork and injectable antibiotics easily reaches $400–$800. Source | Exam, diagnostics and antibiotics or eye medication; Furry Critter Network's $400–$800 for a full respiratory workup | $200–$800 |

What drives the cost
- Height, not floor space, drives the enclosure price: ReptiFiles' minimum is 18×18×36 in, and a 24×18×36 in PVC arboreal enclosure is $199 at Dubia.com (on sale from $249). A glass 18×18×36 in tank is $185 at Walmart.
- Food is cheap compared with insect-eating geckos: adults eat a powdered complete gecko diet every 2–3 days (ReptiFiles), and an 8 oz bag is about $20–$23. Insects are an optional extra once a week.
- The heat is low-wattage: ReptiFiles starts with a 25 W bulb and warns against keeping cresties at room temperature with no heat source. The bulb plus an 8 W UVB tube cost only about $26 a year in electricity.
- PetMD says to replace UVB bulbs every six months even while they still light, so budget two ShadeDweller-type UVB tubes a year (about $22 each).
- Crested geckos can drop their tails when grabbed or stressed, and ReptiFiles says the tail will not grow back. It is not a medical emergency and needs no special care, so it rarely adds a vet bill, but it is permanent.
- The pet store price is not the ceiling: Josh's Frogs sells keeper-grade cresties at $59.99, but individually pictured high-end morphs list at $999.99, and The Vet Desk says rare morphs top $1,000.
Is it legal where you live?
Legal to keep without a permit in most states. Hawaii only lets in animals on its conditionally approved or restricted lists, and no geckos are on either, so crested geckos can't legally be brought into Hawaii. New Jersey requires a possession permit for all geckos except the Tokay gecko. PetSmart reminds buyers to wash hands after handling, since reptiles can carry Salmonella.
Restricted or banned in: Hawaii, New Jersey.
Cities and counties can have their own rules. Check locally before you buy.

| Complete gecko diet powder plus occasional insects | $120 | ReptiFiles: adults eat a complete gecko diet (CGD) every 2–3 days and insects 0–1 times a week; PetMD suggests CGD daily and 5–10 dusted crickets once or twice a week. The Vet Desk (Jan 2026) puts crested gecko food at $5–$20 a month, which sets the low and high here. Typical: about six 8 oz bags of Pangea Fruit Mix a year at $19.99 = $120, including a cup of 100 crickets ($9.30) now and then. No published grams-per-year figure was found, so bag count is an estimate. | Substrate changes and heat bulbs | $61 | ReptiFiles says to let the substrate dry between mistings because constant moisture breeds mold. No published replacement schedule was found, so this assumes two full changes a year: 2 × Eco Earth 24 qt ($25.99) + two 25 W basking bulbs ($4.39 each) = $61. Low: two changes with 8 qt bags ($9.99) = $29. High: four changes with 24 qt bags = $113. The Vet Desk puts environment maintenance at $8–$20 a month, which is higher than this. ReptiFiles: Crested Gecko Temperatures, Lighting & Humidity; PetSmart: Zoo Med Eco Earth Loose Fiber Substrate, 8 qt ($9.99; 24 qt $25.99); Dubia.com: Lighting collection, page 2; The Vet Desk: How Much Does a Crested Gecko Cost? | Electricity for heat bulb and UVB | $26 | ReptiFiles: 14 h of light in summer and 10 h in winter (12 h average). Typical: 25 W bulb + 8 W UVB tube = 33 W × 12 h × 365 = 145 kWh × $0.1799/kWh (EIA US residential average, 12 months to July 2026) = $26. Low: heat bulb needed only half the year in a warm house = 90 kWh = $16. High: 40 W bulb + 8 W UVB for 14 h a day = 245 kWh = $44. EIA Electric Power Monthly Table 5.3: Average price of electricity by sector (residential, rolling 12 months to July 2026 = 17.99¢/kWh); ReptiFiles: Crested Gecko Temperatures, Lighting & Humidity; Northern Gecko (US): Arcadia ShadeDweller Pro T5 UVB Kit 12 in, 8 W ($88.79) | |
| Annual reptile-vet exam + fecal test | $150 | PetMD recommends a vet exam once a year. Exam $86–$108 (Forever Vets, Gentle Vet) + fecal $61 = about $150. Furry Critter Network: consultation $75–$150 plus $30–$60 for a fecal. PetMD: Crested Gecko Care Sheet (Maria Zayas, DVM, updated Nov 2025); Forever Vets (FL): Pricing (exotic exam $86, fecal test $61); Gentle Vet Animal Hospital (Green Bay, WI): Exotics pricing, Feb 2026 (reptile wellness exam from $107.62, consultation from $118.39, recheck $77.10); Furry Critter Network: Vet budget for reptile owners (Feb 2026) | |
| Illness and injury, per year | |||
| Unexpected vet bills (illness and injury) | $130 | LOW CONFIDENCE: no US claims or survey data on reptile illness spending was found. Furry Critter Network says a respiratory workup with imaging, bloodwork and weeks of injections reaches $400–$800, and recommends setting aside about $50 a month; The Vet Desk suggests a $0–$200 a month health reserve for crested geckos. Assuming one $300–$400 episode every three years gives about $130 a year; $50 for a gecko with only a minor issue; $400 if illness is frequent. | Insurance, per month | |||
| Nationwide Avian & Exotic (accident & illness) | $15 | Nationwide's exotic plan covers lizards and reptiles (internal parasites, respiratory infections, soft-tissue trauma) and says premiums generally start under $21/month; wellness care isn't covered and quotes are by phone. No crested gecko quote was published: The Zebra reports $11.75/month for a 4-year-old bearded dragon (Jan 2026), and MoneyGeek puts reptile coverage at $27/month on average with Nationwide and $24 with MetLife (Sept 2026).
