What an axolotl really costs
An axolotl itself costs only about $50–$150, and a 20-gallon long tank with a lid, gentle sponge filter, sand, hides and test kit runs about $230–$305 to set up. Yearly costs are low, about $170 with a vet visit plus about $100 set aside for illness, as long as the water stays at 60–64°F; in a warm home, a chiller can add $766 or more.

Health costs to plan for
| Condition | What it is | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swallowed gravel (gut blockage) | LafeberVet and the RVC both warn that swallowed gravel or other objects can block the gut and are fatal unless passed or surgically removed. Source | Exam, X-rays and surgery; Furry Critter Network puts exotic surgery at $500 to well over $1,000 | $500–$1,200 |
| Overheating and bacterial infection | LafeberVet: water above 75°F causes appetite loss and uncontrolled floating and can lead to bacterial infection. Source | Exotic consultation ($118.39 at Gentle Vet) plus medication ($20 to over $100) and cooling the tank | $140–$300 |
| Water-quality problems (ammonia, nitrate, chlorine) | The RVC lists ammonia buildup and chlorine or chloramine as hazards; LafeberVet links long exposure to high nitrate with bulging eyes (exophthalmia). Source | Exam ($86–$108) and correcting water quality with larger water changes and testing | $90–$200 |
The yearly estimate includes an average of $100 for illness and injury. Nationwide's exotic plan lists 'lizards, reptiles & frogs' but not salamanders, and excludes any species not listed and any that need a state permit. MoneyGeek doesn't name any insurer that covers axolotls. Ask Nationwide directly, but expect to pay vet bills yourself.
What drives the cost
- Temperature is the hidden cost: LafeberVet wants 60–64°F and says water above 75°F carries a high risk of illness. A clip-on cooling fan ($23.59) drops a 20-gallon tank a few degrees; a real chiller such as the JBJ Arctica 1/10 HP costs $765.98 plus a pump.
- Axolotls need low flow, so a sponge filter driven by an air pump ($12.99 + $29.99 at Aquarium Co-op) is the usual choice over a hang-on-back filter.
- Never use gravel: LafeberVet and the Royal Veterinary College both say swallowed gravel can cause a fatal blockage, and removing it surgically can run $500 to over $1,000. Fine sand or a bare bottom costs $0–$28.
- Frozen food bought online can cost more to ship than to buy: Bulk Reef Supply charges $29.99 to ship frozen food, versus $3.49 for a pack of Hikari bloodworms, so buy locally if you can.
- Live shipping adds $40–$55 to an online purchase (Josh's Frogs $39.99, Aquatics Unlimited $55), and sellers won't ship to states where axolotls are restricted.
Is it legal where you live?
Restricted in several places. California lists the genus Ambystoma as 'detrimental' under 14 CCR 671, which requires a permit, and the axolotl community has long treated axolotls as illegal there. Maine puts the axolotl on its Category 2 list (captive-bred only, possession permit required). New Jersey requires a permit for exotic amphibians not on its exempt list, and axolotls aren't on it. D.C. bans any animal not on its allowed list, which has no amphibians. Hawaii lists the axolotl as conditionally approved, which needs an import permit. Aquatics Unlimited also won't ship to New Mexico; check local rules.
Restricted or banned in: California, Maine, New Jersey, District of Columbia, Hawaii.
Cities and counties can have their own rules. Check locally before you buy.

How this estimate is built
Every line, with the typical, thrifty and generous figures and where each comes from.
| Item | Typical | Basis and sources | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | |||
| 20-gallon long aquarium (30×12 in) | $70 | LafeberVet: minimum 20 gallons per adult; Aquatics Unlimited specifies a 30×12 in footprint. Aqueon 20-gallon horizontal (long) glass tank, 30.25×12.5 in, $69.99 at PetSmart (regular $79.99, high). A filled tank needs sturdy furniture or a stand (not priced). LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Aquatics Unlimited: Leucistic axolotl ($89.99–$149.99; $55 overnight shipping); PetSmart: Aqueon Standard Glass Rectangle Aquarium (20 gal horizontal, 30.25×12.5 in, $69.99; reg. $79.99) | |
| Full hood or lid | $80 | LafeberVet says to use a lid because axolotls can jump out, and low light is preferred, so the hood's LED can stay off. Aqueon LED Deluxe Full Hood, 30 in (fits 20 long), $79.95 at Walmart. LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Walmart: Aqueon LED Deluxe Full Hood, 30 in, fits 20 long ($79.95) | |
| Sponge filter + air pump | $43 | LafeberVet: strong mechanical filtration but gentle current; the RVC warns against strong flow and over-filtration. Typical: Aquarium Co-op Medium sponge filter $12.99 + single-outlet air pump $29.99 = $43 (airline tubing and a check valve are extra). Low: Small sponge ($11.99). High: Large sponge ($14.99) + dual-outlet pump ($34.99). LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Royal Veterinary College, Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital: Axolotl care sheet (2024); Aquarium Co-op: Sponge filter (Nano $9.99 to Large $14.99); Aquarium Co-op: Air pump with battery backup (single $29.99, dual $34.99) | |
| Fine sand (or bare bottom) | $28 | The RVC says fine sand is best and gravel can be swallowed and cause a fatal obstruction; LafeberVet says a bare bottom is easiest to clean. One 50 lb (0.5 cu ft) bag of Quikrete Premium Play Sand, $28.23 online at Home Depot, covers a 30×12 in floor about 2 in deep; rinse it well first. Low: bare bottom. Royal Veterinary College, Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital: Axolotl care sheet (2024); LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Home Depot: Quikrete 50 lb Premium Play Sand, 0.5 cu ft ($28.23 online) | |
| Two caves or hides | $22 | The RVC recommends caves and pipes as hides; LafeberVet says decor must be secured and not block movement. Typical: 2 × Exo Terra Reptile Cave, Large ($10.99 each). Low: one. High: 2 × X-Large ($15.99). Royal Veterinary College, Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital: Axolotl care sheet (2024); LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Dubia.com: Decor collection | |
| Digital aquarium thermometer | $5 | Temperature is the key number to watch (60–64°F; above 75°F is dangerous, per LafeberVet). Penn-Plax AquaLIFE Therma-Temp digital thermometer, $4.99 at Chewy. LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Chewy: Penn-Plax AquaLIFE Therma-Temp digital aquarium thermometer ($4.99) | |

Royal Veterinary College, Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital: Axolotl care sheet (2024); Chewy: API Stress Coat water conditioner (8 oz $7.69; 16 oz $10.98) | |
| Water test strips | $13 | LafeberVet: ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm and nitrate under 10 ppm; let the tank cycle before adding the axolotl. API 5-in-1 strips at Chewy: 25 ct $12.98 (typical), 4 ct $6.20, 100 ct $24.98. LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Chewy: API 5-in-1 test strips (4 ct $6.20; 25 ct $12.98; 100 ct $24.98) | |

Gentle Vet's exotics fees, which include amphibians, start at $107.62 for a wellness exam and $118.39 for a consultation (Feb 2026); Forever Vets charges $86 for an exotic exam. LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Gentle Vet Animal Hospital (Green Bay, WI): Exotics pricing, Feb 2026 (avian, reptile & other exotics wellness exam from $107.62, consultation from $118.39, recheck $77.10); Forever Vets (FL): Pricing (exotic exam $86, fecal test $61) | |
| Every year | |||
| Pellets, frozen bloodworms and worms | $43 | LafeberVet: adults eat 2–3 times a week, only what they finish in 2–3 minutes (about 5 salmon pellets); foods include bloodworms, blackworms, earthworms and pellets. Typical: 2 × Josh's Frogs Axolotl Bites 3.25 oz ($10.99) + 6 packs of Hikari frozen bloodworms 3.5 oz ($3.49) = $43. Low: 1 pellet pack + 4 bloodworm packs. | Dechlorinator refill | $8 | LafeberVet: change about 30% weekly. 6 gallons × 52 = about 310 gallons a year; at 5 ml per 10 gallons that is about 155 ml (5 oz), so one 8 oz bottle of API Stress Coat ($7.69) a year. LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Chewy: API Stress Coat water conditioner (8 oz $7.69; 16 oz $10.98) | |
| Test strips | $13 | Testing about every two weeks uses one 25-count pack of API 5-in-1 strips a year ($12.98 at Chewy); low 4 ct $6.20; high 100 ct $24.98 for weekly testing. Chewy: API 5-in-1 test strips (4 ct $6.20; 25 ct $12.98; 100 ct $24.98); LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021) | |
| Sponge filter replacement | $13 every 2 years | Sponges are rinsed in old tank water and last a long time; this assumes replacing the Medium sponge filter ($12.99, Aquarium Co-op) every two years. The interval is our assumption. Aquarium Co-op: Sponge filter (Nano $9.99 to Large $14.99) | |
| Annual exotic-vet checkup | $100 | No source gives a set schedule for axolotls; LafeberVet recommends an amphibian vet for quarantine and diagnostics. Typical assumes one yearly exam: Gentle Vet from $107.62, Forever Vets $86. Low: many owners skip a yearly visit if the axolotl is eating and active. High: Gentle Vet consultation $118.39. LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Gentle Vet Animal Hospital (Green Bay, WI): Exotics pricing, Feb 2026 (avian, reptile & other exotics wellness exam from $107.62, consultation from $118.39, recheck $77.10); Forever Vets (FL): Pricing (exotic exam $86, fecal test $61) | |
| Illness and injury, per year | |||
| Unexpected vet bills (illness and injury) | $100 | LOW CONFIDENCE: no US data on axolotl vet spending was found. LafeberVet's common problems (overheating with bacterial infection, swallowed gravel, high-nitrate eye problems) are mostly caused by housing. Assumes an exotic consultation ($118.39 at Gentle Vet) plus medication ($20 to over $100, Furry Critter Network) about every other year; high allows for a costlier workup. LafeberVet: Axolotl care (client handout, 2021); Gentle Vet Animal Hospital (Green Bay, WI): Exotics pricing, Feb 2026 (avian, reptile & other exotics wellness exam from $107.62, consultation from $118.39, recheck $77.10); Furry Critter Network: Vet budget for reptile owners (Feb 2026) | |
