What a green iguana really costs
A green iguana costs only about $25–$200, but ReptiFiles says one adult needs at least a 10×5×6 ft enclosure, which almost always has to be custom-built, plus banks of basking lamps, UVB and night heat. Expect about $1,700–$5,800 for housing and equipment (typically about $3,300), then roughly $1,700 a year for fresh produce, substrate, electricity and a vet check before any illness bills. ReptiFiles puts the lifespan at 15–20+ years, and in Florida and Hawaii you can't legally acquire one as a pet at all.

Health costs to plan for
| Condition | What it is | Typical treatment | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metabolic bone disease | VCA says it usually comes from a diet high in phosphorus and low in calcium or vitamin D3, or too little UVB; signs include a soft 'rubber jaw', swollen limbs and fractures from little force. Source | Urgent injectable or oral calcium, vitamins and sometimes calcitonin, then UVB and diet fixes; range built from a $118 exotic consultation and $77 rechecks (Gentle Vet) up to Furry Critter Network's $400–$800 for a workup with imaging and bloodwork | $200–$800 |
| Egg binding (follicular stasis or dystocia) | VCA says females can form up to 40 eggs at a time, even without a male; poor nutrition, missing UVB or no nesting area can leave eggs or follicles retained, which then needs surgery. Source | Diet, UVB and a nest box first; if she can't lay, surgery to remove the eggs and reproductive tract. Furry Critter Network puts egg-binding surgery at $500 to well over $1,000, higher for large species | $500–$1,500 |
| Mouth rot (infectious stomatitis) and abscesses | VCA describes bleeding, swollen gums and thick mucus, with jaw swelling suggesting an abscess; severe cases need surgery to remove infected tissue. Source | Injectable antibiotics and mouth rinses, sometimes surgery; range built from exam and recheck fees up to Furry Critter Network's $400–$800 for a multi-week antibiotic course with diagnostics | $200–$800 |
| Intestinal parasites and mites | VCA says pinworms are common and often cause no signs; mites and ticks spread from other iguanas. It recommends a fecal exam every year. Source | Fecal test ($61 at Forever Vets), deworming chosen from the result, and a recheck ($77.10 at Gentle Vet) | $100–$250 |
The yearly estimate includes an average of $350 for illness and injury. Insurance is available for this pet; turn it on in the calculator to compare.
What drives the cost
- The enclosure is the real price: ReptiFiles says ready-made adult enclosures are almost impossible to buy, so most owners build one. ThePricer (Sept 2026) puts an adult-ready habitat at about $800 to $3,500+, and a 10 ft PVC enclosure on Etsy lists at $2,500 plus $336.95 shipping.
- Buying a hatchling means paying for housing twice: ReptiFiles' 4×2×4 ft starter size lasts only until the iguana is about 3 ft long, and a 36×18×48 in Zoo Med Iguanarium lists at $547.59.
- Heat runs high: ReptiFiles wants a 120°F basking surface from four or more 100 W halogens (or two 400 W infrared lamps) for an adult, plus a radiant panel at night. At the EIA's June 2026 average of 18.34¢/kWh, about 400 W of basking lamps for 12 hours a day is roughly $320 a year before the night heat.
- Substrate is a hidden recurring bill: ReptiFiles calls for 62–124 gallons of coconut chip substrate in a 10×5 ft floor and says to change it monthly. At $33–$35 per 72 qt block, monthly changes cost about $1,600 a year; this estimate assumes every two months (about $800).
- Vet bills scale with size: Furry Critter Network says large species like iguanas cost more for sedation, dosing and surgery, and puts egg-binding surgery at $500 to well over $1,000. Female iguanas can form up to 40 eggs at a time (VCA) even without a male.
- Florida bans new pet iguanas: FWC says prohibited species 'may no longer be acquired as personal pets.' Existing pets needed a free permit by July 28, 2021 and a PIT tag, and Nationwide won't insure species that need a permit or are illegal to own.
Is it legal where you live?
Florida lists green iguanas as Prohibited: since April 29, 2021 they 'may no longer be acquired as personal pets', and owners who already had one needed a free personal-use permit by July 28, 2021 and a PIT tag. Hawaii says it is illegal to import, possess or transport iguanas, with fines up to $200,000. New Jersey exempts the common iguana (Iguana iguana) from its exotic-animal permit.

| Item | Typical | Basis and sources | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | |||
| Walk-in adult enclosure (at least 10×5×6 ft) | $1,500 | ReptiFiles: one adult needs at least 10×5×6 ft, larger if possible, and ready-made adult enclosures are almost impossible to buy, so most are custom-built. ThePricer (Sept 2026) puts an adult-ready habitat at about $800 to $3,500+ depending on whether it is built at home, bought used or custom-made, and uses $1,500 in its first-year example; we use the same. A ready-made check: an Etsy '10ft x 4ft x 4ft' bioactive PVC enclosure lists at $2,500 plus $336.95 shipping, but it is only 4 ft tall and its description says 96 in long, so it falls short of ReptiFiles' minimum. ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; ThePricer: How much does an iguana cost? (updated Sept 2026); Etsy (EdgeLiveCreationsCo): 10ft x 4ft x 4ft bioactive PVC reptile enclosure ($2,500 + $336.95 shipping) | |
| Starter enclosure for a juvenile (about 4 ft tall) | $548 | ReptiFiles: a juvenile can live temporarily in 4×2×4 ft, replaced once the iguana is about 3 ft long. Priced on the Zoo Med ReptiBreeze Iguanarium, 36×18×48 in, $547.59 at Northern Gecko (marked sold out when checked); it is smaller in floor area than ReptiFiles' 4×2 ft. Low: $0 if you adopt an adult or go straight to the adult enclosure. ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; Northern Gecko: Zoo Med ReptiBreeze Iguanarium, 36×18×48 in ($547.59) | |
| Four 100 W halogen basking bulbs + dome fixtures | $160 | ReptiFiles: a basking surface of about 120°F from clustered halogen floods in ceramic-socket domes, at least 2 for a juvenile and 4+ for an adult (or two 400 W infrared lamp units, not priced). Typical: 2 × Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot 100 W 2-packs ($19.98 at Chewy and PetSmart) + 4 × Zoo Med Deep Dome fixtures ($29.98 at PetSmart) = $160. Low: two bulbs and two domes. High: six of each. ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; Chewy: Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp, 100 W, 2 count ($19.98); PetSmart: Zoo Med Repti Basking Spot Lamp 2-bulb pack, 100 W ($19.98); PetSmart: Zoo Med Reptile Deep Dome Lamp Fixture ($29.98) | |
| Radiant heat panel for ambient and night heat | $259 | ReptiFiles keeps nights at 73–84°F with one or two radiant heat panels on a dimming thermostat. Typical: one 220 W, 18¾×17¾ in radiant heat panel, $259.49 at Dubia.com. Low: a 120 W Reptile Basics panel, top of Pangea's $74.99–$114.99 range (sold out when checked). High: two 220 W panels. ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; Dubia.com: Radiant heat panels (40 W $159.49 to 220 W $259.49); Pangea Reptile: Reptile Basics radiant heat panel ($74.99–$114.99) | |
| Multi-output dimming thermostat | $400 | ReptiFiles names the Herpstat 4, a four-output proportional thermostat that can run basking lamps and heat panels together; $399.99 at Pangea Reptile. A cheaper single-output thermostat per heat source would work but wasn't priced, so low and high are the same. ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; Pangea Reptile: Herpstat 4 ($399.99) | |
| Two 48 in T5 HO UVB kits (14%) | $260 | ReptiFiles' shopping list has two Arcadia T5 HO Dragon 14% kits, at least as long as the iguana's snout-to-vent length, for a UVI of 3.0–4.0 at the basking area. Typical: 2 × Arcadia ProT5 14% Dragon kit, 48 in, $129.95 each at ReptiChip. Low: one kit. High: 2 × Arcadia Lumenize Smart UVB kit, 48 in ($179.95). ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet PDF (shopping list); ReptiChip: Arcadia ProT5 14% UVB Dragon lighting kit (48 in $129.95; Lumenize 48 in $179.95) | |
| Initial substrate fill (2–4 in coconut chip) | $175 | ReptiFiles: 2–4 in of moistened coconut husk or cypress mulch, about 62–124 US gallons for a 10×5 ft floor. A 72 qt (18 gal) ReptiChip block is $34.95 at Chewy: 4 blocks for 2 in ($140), 5 for about 2.5 in ($175), 7 for 4 in ($245). Locally sourced cypress mulch can be cheaper (not priced). ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; Chewy: ReptiChip compressed coconut chip substrate, 72 qt ($34.95) | |
| First year | |||
| New-pet reptile-vet exam | $100 | VCA recommends prompt vet evaluation for any change from normal and an annual fecal check; a new iguana should be seen by a reptile vet. Forever Vets (FL) exotic exam $86; Gentle Vet (WI) avian, reptile and exotic wellness exam from $107.62, consultation from $118.39 (Feb 2026). VCA Animal Hospitals: What are some common diseases of pet iguanas?; Forever Vets (FL): Pricing (exotic exam $86, fecal test $61); Gentle Vet Animal Hospital (WI): Exotics pricing, Feb 2026 | |
| Fecal parasite test | $61 | VCA says intestinal parasites such as pinworms are common in iguanas and are found by fecal testing. Forever Vets lists $61; Furry Critter Network says fecal exams usually add $30–$60. | Fresh greens, vegetables and fruit (daily) | $300 | ReptiFiles: offer as much as the iguana will eat every day, about 60% dark leafy greens, 30% other vegetables and 10% fruit. ThePricer (Sept 2026) puts fruit, vegetables and common supplements at about $10–$40 a month; we use $25 a month ($300). For scale, USDA ERS 2023 average retail prices are $2.48/lb for fresh collard greens and $2.97/lb for turnip greens, so $300 buys roughly 2 lb of greens a week. No published weight of food per day for adults was found. ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; ThePricer: How much does an iguana cost? (updated Sept 2026); USDA ERS: Fruit and vegetable prices (collard greens $2.48/lb, turnip greens $2.97/lb, 2023) | |
| Calcium and multivitamin powder (Repashy SuperVeggie) | $66 | ReptiFiles: sprinkle Repashy SuperVeggie, a calcium and multivitamin powder, on food at every meal. A 6 oz jar is $16.49 at Dubia.com. Typical assumes one jar every three months (4 a year); low 2 jars, high 6. Jar usage for a 5 ft iguana is our estimate. ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; Dubia.com: Repashy SuperVeggie, 6 oz ($16.49) | |
| Substrate replacement | $797 | ReptiFiles says to change loose substrate monthly. A 2 in layer for a 10×5 ft floor takes 4 × 72 qt ReptiChip blocks at the $33.20 Chewy Autoship price ($132.80 per change). Typical: a full change every two months (6 a year) = $797. Low: every three months = $531. High: monthly, as ReptiFiles advises = $1,594. A bioactive setup, which ReptiFiles calls the most cost-effective, avoids most of this but wasn't priced. ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; Chewy: ReptiChip compressed coconut chip substrate, 72 qt ($34.95; Autoship $33.20) | |
| Electricity for basking lamps and night heat | $410 | ReptiFiles keeps lights on 12–13 h a day. Typical: four 100 W halogens for 12 h (1,752 kWh) + one 220 W heat panel at 50% duty for 12 h of night (482 kWh) = 2,234 kWh × $0.1834/kWh (EIA US residential average, June 2026) = $410. Low: thermostat holds the halogens to an average 250 W and the panel to 30% = $254. High: two 400 W infrared lamps at 70% duty + two 220 W panels at 50% = $627. UVB tubes and LED grow lights are not included. Duty cycles are our assumption; ThePricer's simpler four-lamp model gives $317 a year. EIA Monthly Energy Review Table 9.10: Average retail prices of electricity (residential, June 2026 = 18.34¢/kWh); ThePricer: How much does an iguana cost? (updated Sept 2026); ReptiFiles: Green Iguana Care Sheet; Dubia.com: Radiant heat panels (220 W) | |
| Annual reptile-vet exam + fecal test | $150 | VCA recommends an annual fecal exam for iguanas. Exam $86–$108 (Forever Vets, Gentle Vet) + fecal $61 = about $150. Low: Furry Critter Network's $75 consultation + $30 fecal. High: its $150 consultation + $60 fecal. Moving a 5–6 ft lizard may need a large carrier (not priced). VCA Animal Hospitals: What are some common diseases of pet iguanas?; Forever Vets (FL): Pricing (exotic exam $86, fecal test $61); Gentle Vet Animal Hospital (WI): Exotics pricing, Feb 2026; Furry Critter Network: Vet budget for reptile owners (Feb 2026) | |
| Illness and injury, per year | |||
| Unexpected vet bills (illness and injury) | $350 | LOW CONFIDENCE: no US data on iguana illness spending was found. Built from episode costs: Furry Critter Network says a reptile respiratory infection easily reaches $400–$800 with imaging, bloodwork and antibiotics, surgery such as egg binding runs $500 to well over $1,000, and large species like iguanas cost more. One $400–$800 episode every two years is about $300; $350 allows for size. Low: a parasite treatment or recheck most years. High: an egg-binding surgery or a long illness every couple of years. Furry Critter Network: Vet budget for reptile owners (Feb 2026); VCA Animal Hospitals: What are some common diseases of pet iguanas? | |
| Insurance, per month | |||
| Nationwide Avian & Exotic (accident & illness) | $20 | Nationwide's exotic plan covers lizards and reptiles and says premiums generally start under $21 a month; wellness care isn't covered. It excludes species that need a permit or are illegal to own, so Florida and Hawaii owners are ineligible. No iguana-specific quote was found; Nationwide quotes exotics by phone.
