What a Boxer really costs

Boxers cost little to groom and sit in the large size band, so day-to-day spending is modest. The expense comes from a cancer-prone breed: lumps, lymphoma and heart rhythm disease mean frequent biopsies, Holter monitoring and possible chemotherapy in middle age.

Health costs to plan for

Lemonade's October 2025 Boxer rate is $50-$55 a month at age 1 but doubles to $100-$105 by age 7 as cancer and heart claims rise, more than the Malamute or Great Pyrenees at the same ages.

ConditionHow it affects BoxersTypical treatmentCost
LymphomaAKC lists certain cancers among the conditions Boxer breeders screen for, and lymphoma is among Lemonade's most common Boxer claims. SourceLymphoma diagnosis and chemotherapy (Lemonade average cost range for Boxers)$2,000–$7,000
Skin tumors (including mast cell tumors)Cancerous skin lumps are on Lemonade's list of top Boxer claims; every new lump needs a needle aspirate. SourceLump biopsy and surgical removal (Lemonade average cost range for Boxers)$1,000–$5,000
Boxer cardiomyopathy (ARVC)2.5% of 405 Boxers DNA-tested through OFA for the ARVC (Striatin) variant were affected, and 5.5% of 2,458 OFA advanced cardiac exams were abnormal. SourceCardiac workup and anti-arrhythmic medication (Lemonade average cost range for Boxers)$600–$2,500
HypothyroidismOnly 75.6% of 2,349 Boxer thyroid panels at OFA were normal, the ninth-worst result of any breed. SourceDiagnosis plus a year of levothyroxine and monitoring bloodwork$300–$850

The yearly estimate already includes an average allowance of $992 for illness and injury. A single surgery can cost several times that, which is the case for an emergency fund or insurance.

What drives the cost of a Boxer

  • Budget for a needle aspirate on every new lump; Lemonade lists skin cancers among the breed's top claims at $1,000-$5,000 to remove.
  • Ask for annual Holter (24-hour ECG) screening once your Boxer is an adult if the breeder recommends it; it costs less than treating an undiagnosed arrhythmia emergency.
  • AKC notes Boxers tolerate heat and cold poorly, so plan on climate-controlled indoor living, a cooling mat and possibly a winter coat rather than a backyard kennel.
  • A playful, high-energy dog that AKC says must never run loose needs a secure fence or paid exercise; daycare or a walker is a recurring cost for full-time workers.
  • Grooming is a rubber curry brush and monthly nail trims, so a professional groomer line item can stay near zero.
