What a betta fish really costs

A betta costs $4–$20 at a chain pet store, but a proper heated, filtered 5-gallon setup typically runs about $185 (roughly $75 on a tight budget, $365 for a premium kit) before the fish goes in. After that, expect around $135 a year for food, filter cartridges, test strips, electricity, a replacement heater every couple of years and the odd medication, or roughly $600–$900 over a 3–5 year life.

Health costs to plan for

ConditionWhat it isTypical treatmentCost
Fin rotBacterial fraying of the fins, usually from poor water quality, cold water or sharp decor; the most common betta problem. SourceFrequent water changes plus aquarium salt ($5.48) and API Bettafix ($4.58); severe cases need a stronger antibiotic such as KanaPlex ($8.14) and possibly a hospital tank (~$73)$10–$85
Ich (white spot disease)A protozoan parasite that shows as white specks, usually brought in with new fish or plants; treatable if caught early. SourceRaise temperature slowly and dose an ich medication (API Super Ick Cure 4 oz, $6.99); vets diagnose by skin scraping, about $50–$100 for an in-clinic fish visit$7–$107
VelvetA dinoflagellate parasite that gives a gold-dust sheen; wild and farmed fish often carry it, and it kills quickly if missed. SourceHeat, salt and darkness for 2–3 weeks (aquarium salt about $5) or copper/acriflavine medication; a fish vet visit runs about $50–$100$5–$100
DropsyFluid buildup with pinecone-like raised scales; a sign of organ failure or infection rather than one disease, and often fatal. SourceAntibiotics (Seachem KanaPlex 5 g, $8.14) and better water; PetMD's fish vet advises veterinary guidance, about $50–$100 in clinic$8–$108
Swim bladder disorderFloating, sinking or tilting caused by poor water quality, diet, infection or deformity. SourceSinking diet and clean water at home; a vet visit ($50–$100 in clinic, $200–$300 house call) before X-rays, which are not priced here$0–$300

The yearly estimate includes an average of $10 for illness and injury. Mainstream U.S. pet insurers do not cover fish. Nationwide's avian and exotic plan, the main exotic policy, covers birds, rabbits, reptiles, small mammals and a few others, and lists any species not named as ineligible; fish are not named.

What drives the cost

  • The fish is the cheapest part: PetSmart lists veiltail males at $3.99 and halfmoons at $19.99, while a basic 5.5-gallon kit, heater, test strips and decor already cost over $100.
  • The 'betta in a bowl' image is wrong. Vets writing for PetMD and Chewy call for at least 2.5–5 gallons (10 is better), water at 76–81°F and a low-flow filter, and say a heater is needed even in a warm home because temperature swings stress the fish.
  • Most 5-gallon kits leave out the heater. The Top Fin, Marina iGlo and Fluval Spec V kits all come without one, so budget $15–$53 extra, and plan to replace it every year or two because cheap heaters fail.
  • Electricity is small but real: a heater averaging about 7.5 W plus a 4 W filter use roughly 100 kWh a year, about $19 at the July 2026 U.S. average of 18.31 cents/kWh. A cold room doubles the heater's share.
  • Medicine is cheap; vets are not. Over-the-counter fin rot and ich treatments cost $5–$10 a bottle, but an in-clinic fish vet visit runs about $50–$100 and a house call $200–$300, often more than the fish and its tank are worth.
  • Show-grade fish from U.S. breeders cost $25–$100 plus $15–$40 shipping, but they need the same tank and running costs as a $4 pet-store betta.

Is it legal where you live?

Bettas are legal to own throughout the U.S. and sold at national chains. They are not on the federal injurious-wildlife list, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service rates their invasion risk as uncertain, with small established populations in southern Florida and Texas, so never release one.

Cities and counties can have their own rules. Check locally before you buy.

Every year
Betta pellets plus frozen treats$29$15–$57Hikari Betta Bio-Gold 0.7 oz is $7.49 (Aquarium Co-op); Chewy's guide says to replace opened pellets every six months, so 2 tubs = $15 (low). Typical adds 4 packs of Hikari frozen bloodworms a year at $3.49 = $14. High adds a $3.49 pack every month ($42). Frozen food bought online can carry a $29.99 cold-ship fee, so most owners buy it in store. Aquarium Co-op: Hikari Betta Bio-Gold Pellets, 0.7 oz (price and feeding guide); Bulk Reef Supply: Hikari Bio-Pure Frozen Blood Worms; Chewy: Betta Fish Care Guide (input from Jessie Sanders, DVM, DABVP Fish Practice)
Water conditioner refill$9 every 2 years$2–$11Weekly 25% changes on a 5-gallon tank use about 65 gallons of new water a year; at API's 5 ml per 10 gallons that is roughly 33 ml, so an 8 oz ($8.99) bottle lasts years and usually expires first. Modeled as one bottle every 2 years. Chewy: API Stress Coat Aquarium Water Conditioner (sizes, dosing); Chewy: Betta Fish Care Guide (input from Jessie Sanders, DVM, DABVP Fish Practice)
Filter cartridges (6-pack)$16 2 times a year$0–$16Chewy's vet-reviewed guide says to replace multi-media cartridges about monthly. Top Fin Silenstream small cartridges cost $15.99 per 6-pack at PetSmart, so one pack every 6 months. Low is $0 for a sponge filter that is only rinsed. PetSmart: Top Fin Silenstream Small Filter Cartridges, 6-pack; Chewy: Betta Fish Care Guide (input from Jessie Sanders, DVM, DABVP Fish Practice)
Test strips$13$6–$25Testing about every two weeks uses one 25-count pack of API 5-in-1 strips a year ($12.98 at Chewy). Low: occasional checks with a 4 ct pack ($6.20). High: 100 ct ($24.98) for weekly testing. Chewy: API 5 in 1 Aquarium Test Strips
Replacement heater$38 every 2 years$15–$53Bulk Reef Supply advises replacing heaters 'every 1–2 years in most cases' (cheap $30–$40 heaters about yearly), because a stuck heater can cook or chill the fish. Modeled at every 2 years at the setup heater prices. Bulk Reef Supply: 5-Minute Aquarium Guide Ep. 12, Heaters (replacement interval); Chewy: Aqueon Glass Adjustable Aquarium Heater, 50-watt; PetSmart: aquarium heaters (Tetra HT 2–10 gal $15.27); Chewy: AQUAEL Ultra 25W Aquarium Heater (3–7 gal)
Electricity for heater, filter and light$19$13–$40Rough estimate. AquariumScience.org figures about 1.5 W per gallon to hold water 10°F above room temperature, so a 5-gallon heater averages ~7.5 W (65.7 kWh/yr). A small power filter such as the Marina Slim S10 draws 4.1 W (35.9 kWh/yr). 101.6 kWh × $0.1831/kWh (EIA U.S. residential average, July 2026) = $18.60. Low: 5°F rise (3.75 W) + filter = 68.8 kWh = $12.60. High: 20°F rise in a cold room (15 W) + a Fluval Spec V running its full 10 W kit rating 24 h = 219 kWh = $40.10. U.S. EIA Electric Power Monthly: average residential price, July 2026 (18.31 cents/kWh); AquariumScience.org: Aquarium electric cost (heater ~1.5 W per gallon for a 10°F rise); Gardensite: Marina Slim S10 power filter (4.1 W power consumption); Fluval: Spec Aquarium Kit, 5 US Gal (specs: 10 W total)
Plant and decor refresh$8$0–$25Replacing a worn silk plant (Exo Terra, $7.99 at Chewy) or adding botanicals such as the HydrOasis betta bundle ($24.99). Many owners spend nothing. Chewy: fish supplies listing (Fluval Stratum, silk plants, nets, cleaners, conditioners, test kits); Chewy: HydrOasis Betta Bundle (catappa leaves, wood apple, cinnamon leaves)
Illness and injury, per year
Fish medications (and the rare vet visit)$10$0–$108Most betta illness is treated at home with over-the-counter products: API Bettafix $4.58, API Super Ick Cure 4 oz $6.99, Seachem KanaPlex 5 g $8.14, aquarium salt $5.48. Typical assumes one or two such bottles a year. High adds one in-clinic fish vet visit ($50–$100 per a fish-only practice) plus KanaPlex. Few general-practice vets see fish, so most owners never pay a vet. Chewy: API Bettafix Antibacterial & Antifungal, 1.7-oz; Chewy: API Liquid Super Ick Cure; Bulk Reef Supply: Seachem KanaPlex, 5 g; Chewy: Betta Fish Fin Rot (reviewed by Ivan Alfonso, DVM); California Fish Vet (Jessie Sanders, DVM): Is paying a fish veterinarian worth the cost?
